Welcome to the Cidade Maravilhosa, or the Marvelous City, as Rio is known in Brazil. Synonymous with the girl from Ipanema, the dramatic views from Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado mountain, and fabulously flamboyant Carnival celebrations, Rio is a city of stunning architecture, abundant museums, and marvelous food. Rio is also home to 23 beaches, an almost continuous 73-km (45-mile) ribbon of sand.As you leave the airport and head to Rio’s beautiful Zona Sul (the touristic South Zone), you’ll drive for about 40 minutes on a highway from where you’ll begin to get a sense of the dramatic contrast between beautiful landscape and devastating poverty. In this teeming metropolis of 12 million people (6.2 million of whom live in Rio proper), the very rich and the very poor live in uneasy proximity. You’ll drive past seemingly endless cinder-block favela, but by the time you reach Copacabana’s breezy, sunny Avenida Atlântica—flanked on one side by white beach and azure sea and on the other by condominiums and hotels—your heart will leap with expectation as you begin to recognize the postcard-famous sights. Now you’re truly in Rio, where cariocas (Rio residents) and tourists live life to its fullest.Enthusiasm is contagious in Rio. Prepare to have your senses engaged and your inhibitions untied. Rio seduces with a host of images: the joyous bustle of vendors at Sunday’s Feira Hippie (Hippie Fair); the tipsy babble at sidewalk cafés as patrons sip their last glass of icy beer under the stars; the blanket of lights beneath the Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain); the bikers, joggers, strollers, and power walkers who parade along the beach each morning. Borrow the carioca spirit for your stay; you may find yourself reluctant to give it back.
Day programme:
Your journey begins in vibrant Rio de Janeiro. This sprawling city is famous for its golden beaches, lush jungle and colourful favelas, all under the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer. This afternoon, you’ll board Scenic Eclipse, where the Captain and crew will greet you personally with a warm welcome and a glass of Champagne. With 18 glorious days ahead of you, take some time to settle in; test out the Scenic Slumber Bed and pick the perfect pillow from the plush pillow menu. Make your way up to the Sky Bar on Deck 10 for a sail away cocktail toasting to your onward voyage overlooking the glittering lights of Rio de Janeiro. According to Salvador’s adopted son Jorge Amado, “In Salvador, magic becomes part of the every-day.” From the shimmering golden light of sunset over the Baía do Todos os Santos, to the rhythmic beats that race along the streets, Salvador, while no longer Brazil’s capital, remains one of its most captivating cities. A large dose of its exoticism comes down to its African heritage—at least 70% of its 2,675,000 population is classified as Afro-Brazilian—and how it has blended into Brazil’s different strands, from the native Indians to the Christian colonizers. Salvadorans may tell you that you can visit a different church every day of the year, which is almost true—the city has about 300. Churches whose interiors are covered with gold leaf were financed by the riches of the Portuguese colonial era, when slaves masked their traditional religious beliefs under a thin Catholic veneer. And partly thanks to modern-day acceptance of those beliefs, Salvador has become the fount of Candomblé, a religion based on personal dialogue with the orixás, a family of African deities closely linked to nature and the Catholic saints. The influence of Salvador’s African heritage on Brazilian music has also turned the city into one of the musical capitals of Brazil, resulting in a myriad of venues to enjoy live music across the city, along with international acclaim for exponents like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Daniela Mercury. Salvador’s economy today is focused on telecommunications and tourism. The still-prevalent African culture draws many tourists—this is the best place in Brazil to hear African music, learn or watch African dance, and see capoeira, a martial art developed by slaves. In the district of Pelourinho, many colorful 18th- and 19th-century houses remain, part of the reason why this is the center of the tourist trade. Salvador sprawls across a peninsula surrounded by the Baía de Todos os Santos on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. The city has about 50 km (31 miles) of coastline. The original city, referred to as the Centro Histórica (Historical Center), is divided into the Cidade Alta (Upper City), also called Pelourinho, and Cidade Baixa (Lower City). The Cidade Baixa is a commercial area—known as Comércio—that runs along the port and is the site of Salvador’s indoor market, Mercado Modelo. You can move between the upper and lower cities on foot, via the landmark Elevador Lacerda, behind the market, or on the Plano Inclinado, a funicular lift, which connects Rua Guindaste dos Padres on Comércio with the alley behind Cathedral Basílica. From the Cidade Histórica you can travel north along the bay to the hilltop Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim. You can also head south to the point, guarded by the Forte Santo Antônio da Barra, where the bay waters meet those of the Atlantic. This area on Salvador’s southern tip is home to the trendy neighborhoods of Barra, Ondina, and Rio Vermelho, with many museums, theaters, shops, and restaurants. Beaches along the Atlantic coast and north of Forte Santo Antônio da Barra are among the city’s cleanest. Many are illuminated at night and have bars and restaurants that stay open late.

Founded by the Portuguese in 1549, Salvador is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas and was the first capital of Brazil. The streets are lined with colourful buildings, music plays at all hours of the day and people dance through the streets to the sound of beating drums moving to the rhythms of the setting sun.Around 80% of Salvador’s population is of African descent and you’ll feel this unique blend of Afro-Brazilian culture all around you, from the music, food and dance to the brilliantly costumed women wearing the traditional Baiana de Acarajé dress.
Start your Expedition Cruise in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, located in the south of Santiago Island. You can explore its old centre overlooking the ocean and its historical buildings with transom windows. In the old quarter, you can also learn about the diversity of the archipelago’s cultural origins in the Ethnographic Museum. To finish your day, head to the harbour to visit the Diogo Gomes statue, paying homage to the man who discovered the archipelago in 1460.
Day programme:
After six days crossing the Atlantic, Scenic Eclipse makes landfall at Cape Verde. Over the next two days, explore these islands off the West African coastline, from the capital of Santiago to the outer atoll of São Vicente. The islands were uninhabited prior to Portuguese colonisation in the 15th century but soon became an integral part of the African slave trade. Today, the islands are known for pottery, hand dyed textiles, paintings, instruments and sculptures, highlighting their unique cultural blend. Make your way to Alexandre Albuquerque Square for a local seafood lunch while surrounded by intriguing colonial architecture and lush greenery.
Porto Novo, the second largest city on Santo Antão, is located in the dry southeast of the island. A dusty wind blows constantly here. You can explore the main street with its former mansions, a little church, markets that have local fish, grogue and fresh goat cheese for sale, shops and-of course-the harbour. At the back of the town is the 2,000m-high Topo de Coroa, which is a fairly easy climb and has magnificent 360-degree views. Around the town, family-owned farms grow fruit and vegetables which are sold at regular markets in the town. There are some old churches from the Portuguese era, as well as a couple of elegant squares with pleasant bars and cafés, from which to watch the world go by.
Day programme:
Today the island of Santo Antão awaits. The westernmost island of Cape Verde rises from the sea with immense volcanic walls that tower over green peaks and perfectly farmed terraced valleys. With a desert climate on the south side and high mountains at its centre, the scenery will leave you spellbound. Largely untouched by tourism, the island will be yours almost exclusively.Explore the island’s most populous city, Porto Novo, which began life as a tiny fishing port just over a century ago. You’ll have time to try the famous Cape Verde rum, or ‘grogue’ as it’s called. Made from sugarcane, it’s the national drink.
As you sail into Malaga you will notice what an idyllic setting the city enjoys on the famous Costa del Sol. To the east of this provincial capital, the coast along the region of La Axarqua is scattered with villages, farmland and sleepy fishing hamlets – the epitome of traditional rural Spain. To the west stretches a continuous city where the razzmatazz and bustle creates a colourful contrast that is easily recognisable as the Costa del Sol. Surrounding the region, the Penibéetica Mountains provide an attractive backdrop overlooking the lower terraced slopes which yield olives and almonds. This spectacular mountain chain shelters the province from cold northerly winds, giving it a reputation as a therapeutic and exotic place in which to escape from cold northern climes. Malaga is also the gateway to many of Andalusia’s enchanting historic villages, towns and cities.

Your journey ends in the city of Málaga on Spain’s spectacular Costa del Sol. This glamorous resort town is also one of the oldest cities in the world, dating back some 3,000 years. Málaga is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and the streets filled with architectural delights from colourful baroque designs to a historic Roman theatre. After one final delicious breakfast on board Scenic Eclipse, it’s time to disembark your ultra-luxury home-at-sea, taking with you a lifetime of memories of this truly unique journey across the globe. Night Market @ Koko’s features a classic teppanyaki grill. Enjoy real interaction with the chef as he guides you on an inspired journey of the night market dishes from Asia, India and the Middle East, preparing dishes right in front of you. This experience is not the usual show you may envisage, where food is thrown and eggs cracked on the grill. Rather, it is an intimate dining experience for only eight guests and the chef. There are waiters continuously circulating with beverages and making sure the guests are well attended. Bookings are required for the Night Market @ Koko’s dining, located on Deck 4.

The most recent insights and world-class technologies have been implemented on board Scenic Eclipse. Amongst our extensive range of health and safety measures, Scenic Eclipse is equipped with an advanced Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system throughout the yacht and in guest suites which provides 100% fresh air through both a UVC and HEPA filter treatment.
In most cases we are able to accommodate special requirements. Please provide as much detail as possible prior to your cruise departure of your dietary requirements to the Scenic Reservations Team, or your travel agent.
Scenic Eclipse is equipped with a free self-service laundry located on Deck 3. It features washing machines, dryers, irons and ironing boards and is available 24 hours.
Complimentary internet facilities are available and Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the ship for your personal electronic devices. We cannot guarantee the availability or quality of the internet connections as this may vary according to destination and weather. Please note service will be limited in Polar and remote regions. Some sites also may not be accessible due to Scenic firewall/company protection.
When you are relaxing on board, the dress code is smart casual and comfortable. Do not forget your swimsuits and exercise attire for the heated pools and plunge pools, the wellness areas and the gym, yoga and Pilates studio.
For evenings, while there are no formal nights, the recommended on board dress code is elegant casual for most restaurants. Suggested attire for women includes a dress, skirt or trousers with a sweater or blouse, and for men, trousers and a collared shirt. A tie and jacket are optional, but not required.
The official language spoken on board is English. All officers, staff and crew as well as local guides and regional specialists speak fluent English. All announcements and lectures will be presented in English.
To ensure you are properly outfitted for your polar cruise, Scenic will provide you with a complimentary polar parka on selected voyages. You will receive your parka when you embark your cruise and is yours to keep as a memento. You will also have complimentary use of polar boots for the cruise duration. In addition to these items, it is imperative that you bring your own waterproof trousers.
Luxury expedition style cruising is not recommended for children under 12. Guests under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult and must share their accommodation with an adult. No children programs or babysitting services are available on board.
For your peace of mind, Scenic Eclipse is equipped with a medical centre offering primary care, staffed by a doctor on call at all times. You must advise us prior to finalising your booking of any pre-existing medical conditions that might increase your risk of requiring medical attention, affecting the normal conduct of the cruise and / or the enjoyment of other cruise guests.
It is important to note, however, that there are no hospitals or doctors available in polar and remote regions, and emergency evacuation is extremely difficult and expensive.
Cruising conditions can be unpredictable and rough waters may be encountered at any time. If you suffer from sea sickness, please consult your Medical Practitioner prior to your cruise and carry the recommended preventative medications at all times. Our resident medical team are available to assist you with additional medication and services if required, with any relevant payments charged to your on board account.
Scenic Eclipse is a non-smoking vessel in all public areas. There is a designated outside smoking area on Deck 6 for guests. All suites, including suite veranda’s and terraces are non-smoking.
In selected ports on request, visitors may be allowed on board. Visitation is not permitted on embarkation and disembarkation day. A visitor form is to be completed prior to the cruise. The guests will be informed once approved. Visitors will receive a visitor pass at ship’s gangway after they provide photo identification. Visitors will need to be accompanied at all times.
