Day 1: Nuuk (Godthaab)

Nuuk, meaning “the cape”, was Greenland’s first town (1728). Started as a fort and later mission and trading post some 240 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, it is the current capital. Almost 30% of Greenland’s population lives in the town. Not only does Nuuk have great natural beauty in its vicinity, but there are Inuit ruins, Hans Egede’s home, the parliament, and the Church of our Saviour as well. The Greenlandic National Museum has an outstanding collection of Greenlandic traditional dresses, as well as the famous Qilakitsoq mummies. The Katuaq Cultural Center’s building was inspired by the undulating Northern Lights and can house 10% of Nuuk’s inhabitants.

Day itinerary:

In the bustling capital city of Greenland, you could be forgiven for forgetting you are in such a vast and isolated country. Nuuk is Greenland’s economic and social hub, home to more than a third of Greenland’s population, and although it feels like a world capital, scratch the surface, and a uniquely Greenlandic character can be found underneath. Nuuk Cathedral overlooks the gorgeous old Colonial Harbour district and the Greenland National Museum, resting place of the legendary Qilakitsoq mummies, the true highlight of the museum’s archaeological collection. Above the Colonial Harbour sits downtown Nuuk, with lines of Scandistyle apartments, a bustling shopping district, the Greenlandic Parliament, Nuuk City Hall (which welcomes visitors to see its artwork) and even outdoor cafes selling locally produced food and beer. These nods to modernity compete for space with local artisan boutiques, the meat market selling the catch from Nuuk’s vast fjord-lands, and the stunning Katuaq Cultural Centre, where blockbuster movies, as well as local and foreign performers entertain the people of Nuuk. Although Nuuk has long been a melting pot of Danish and Greenlandic ideas, this is a city where Greenland displays its sophistication, with the Country’s only traffic lights, roundabouts and University. Most of all, expect to find a multitude of friendly people who are proud of who they are, and equally proud of the city they call home.

Day 2: Sermiligaaq

Day itinerary:

Some 60 kilometers southeast of the entrance to Kangerlussuaq Fjord and halfway between Maniitsoq and Kangaamiut is Sermilinnguaq, one of the smaller fjords leading to the Greenland Icecap’s westernmost valley glaciers in South Greenland. Northeast of Maniitsoq’s rugged scenery with peaks rising hundreds of meters into the sky, the narrow fjord with its steep mountainsides is one of the preferred halibut fishing areas for the local fishermen from Maniitsoq and Kangaamiut. In 2019, the Greenland Environment Fund granted resources to clean up and remove derelict fishing gear which had washed up along the Sermilinnguaq Fjord based on the fishermen’s request. Razorbills, Brünnich’s Guillemots (Thick-billed Murres), Common Guillemots, and Black Guillemots, Glaucous Gulls, and Black-legged Kittiwakes –all attracted by the rich fishing grounds- have formed eight bird colonies in Sermilinnguaq. As a result, 3,000 hectares of the fjord are considered an Important Bird Area.

Day 3: Cruising by Evighedsfjord

Day itinerary:

Evighedsfjord (Eternity Fjord) is a large fjord northeast of Kangaamiut in southwest Greenland. The fjord has a length of 75 kilometers and several branches with numerous glaciers coming down from the Maniitsoq Ice Cap to the north can be seen. The Evighedsfjord has several bends and whenever the ship reaches the supposed end the fjord continues in another direction and seems to go on forever. Qingua Kujatdleq Glacier is at its southeastern end. At the northwestern end a U-shaped valley has seven glaciers coming down from the mountains but not reaching the water. The glaciers had their maximum extent around the year 1870 and have gone through several cycles of advance and retreat. The mountains on either side of the fjord can reach in excess of 2,000 meters and the fjord has a depth of up to 700 meters. Evighedsfjord’s snowline is at 1,100 meters and the Evighedsfjord region is famous as one of Greenland’s best heli-skiing areas.

Day 4: Sisimiut (Holsteinsborg)

Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Sisimiut is the northernmost town in Greenland where the port remains free of ice in the winter. Yet it is also the southernmost town where there is enough snow and ice to drive a dogsled in winter and spring. In Sisimiut, travelling by sled has been the primary means of winter transportation for centuries. In fact, the area has been inhabited for approximately 4,500 years. Modern Sisimiut is the largest business center in the north of Greenland, and is one of the fastest growing Greenlandic cities. Commercial fishing is the lead economy in the town‘s thriving industrial base.

Day itinerary:

Sisimiut (‘The People of the Fox Holes’) is Greenland’s second city, the largest Arctic City in North America, and a hub between the warmer South and the frozen North of the country. With a young, dynamic population, including students from all over the country, Sisimiut is one of the fastest growing cities in Greenland. Inhabited for more than four and a half thousand years, the Danish Colonial Era saw the rapid development of the city into a trade centre, and the old buildings and artefacts can be seen at Sisimiut Museum, a collection of beautifully restored buildings displaying everything from ancient turf houses to modern Inuit art. The local artisans are considered some of the best in Greenland, and often sell their wares direct from their communal workshop in the harbour, where they barter with hunters for raw materials. Today, modern industry focussed on processing sea food and shipping; KNI, the state-run chain of general stores operating in even the most remote settlements is based in Sisimiut. Most residents still live in the colourful wooden houses Greenland is so well known for. Sisimiut’s vast back country offers excellent opportunities for hiking and fishing, and the locals often use sled dogs or snowmobiles to get around their vast mountainous playground during the long winters. In the summer, one can walk as far as Kangerlussuaq International Airport, a trail also used for the gruelling Polar Circle Marathon, one of the toughest endurance events in the world.

Day 5: Ilulissat (Jakobshavn)

Known as the birthplace of icebergs, the Ilulissat Icefjord produces nearly 20 million tons of ice each day. In fact, the word Ilulissat means “icebergs” in the Kalaallisut language. The town of Ilulissat is known for its long periods of calm and settled weather, but the climate tends to be cold due to its proximity to the fjord. Approximately 4,500 people live in Ilulissat, the third-largest town in Greenland after Nuuk and Sisimiut. Some people here estimate that there are nearly as many sled dogs as human beings living in the town that also boasts a local history museum located in the former home of Greenlandic folk hero and famed polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Day 7: Pond Inlet, Nunavut

Located in northern Baffin Island, Pond Inlet is a small, predo¬minantly Inuit community, with a population of roughly 1,500 inhabitants. In 1818, the British explorer John Ross named a bay in the vicinity after the English astronomer John Pond. Today Pond Inlet is considered one of Canada’s “jewels of the North” thanks to several picturesque glaciers and mountain ranges nearby. Many archaeological sites of ancient Dorset and Thule peoples can be found near Pond Inlet. The Inuit hunted caribou, ringed and harp seals, fish, polar bears, walrus, narwhals, geese, ptarmigans and Arctic hares, long before European and American whalers came here to harvest bowhead whales. Pond Inlet is also known as a major center of Inuit art, especially the printmaking and stone carving that are featured in the town’s art galleries.

Day 8: Prince Leopold Island, Nunavut
Day 9: Strezelecki Harbour
Day 10: Gjoa Haven, Nunavut

Day itinerary:

King William Island’s flat coastal terrain holds only one settlement. Although the area around Gjoa Haven had already been used by the Netsilik Inuit, the Scandinavian name was given to it by Amundsen during his crossing of the Northwest Passage when he overwintered for two years with his ship Gjøa in the natural harbor on King William Island’s southeastern side. 250 kilometers above the Arctic Circle the average temperature hovers around 0 degrees Celsius in September. Amundsen’s presence (with a ship full of interesting supplies specifically brought for trade) attracted Netsilik from camps in the vicinity. The Netsilik had been here at Usqsuqtuuq -meaning “place of plenty blubber”- because of the fat fish and sea mammals in nearby waters. In 1927 the Hudson’s Bay Company set up a trading post and the community has grown from then on. Today some 1,500 predominantly Inuit inhabitants live in Gjoa Haven. There is a path connecting several sites forming the Northwest Passage Territorial Trail, including the Heritage Centre, the Hamlet Centre where one can learn about the early European explorers and their fate, and places used by Amundsen. Artifacts relating to Franklin’s expedition were found near Gjoa Haven and the wrecks of his two ships Erebus and Terror have recently been located not too far away. Although there are some muskoxen and caribou on the island, a different attraction for some is a nine-hole golf course, known to be Nunavut’s most northerly.

Day 11: King William Island, Nunavut
Day 12: Flexure Bay, Nunavut
Day 13: Radstock Bay, Devon Island

Devon Island is Canada’s sixth largest island and was first seen by Europeans in the early 17th century. The Thule culture had already settled there many centuries before, and left behind qarmat homes, made of rocks, whale bones, rock and sod walls, and skins for roofs that tell a story of over 800 years of human habitation. Other striking finds in this area are the many fossils of corals, crinoids and nautiloids that can be seen. Just across Lancaster Sound is Prince Leopold Island, a Canadian Important Bird Area, a federally listed migratory bird sanctuary, and a Key Migratory Bird Terrestrial Habitat site with large numbers of Thick-billed Murres, Northern Fulmars and Black-legged Kittiwakes that breed there.

Day 14: Dundas Harbour, Devon Island, Nunavut

Dundas Harbour is located in the southeast of Devon Island, Canada’s 6th largest island. It is a forlorn but starkly beautiful spot. The island was first sighted by Europeans in 1616 by the English explorers Robert Bylot and William Baffin. But it did not appear on maps until after explorer William Edward Parry’s exploration in the 1820’s. Parry named it after Devon, England. In the local Inuktitut language, the place is called Talluruti, which translates as “a woman’s chin with tattoos on it.” This refers to the deep crevasses and streaks on Devon Island, which from a distance resemble traditional facial tattoos. On land there are remains of a Thule settlement dating back to 1000 A.D., including tent rings, middens and a gravesite. There are also much more recent remains a Royal Canadian Mounted Police outpost. The first post was established in 1924 to monitor and control illegal activities, such as foreign whaling, in the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage. But conditions were so isolated and severe that the post was abandoned in 1933. It was reopened in 1945, but again closed, this time permanently, in 1951. Today, Devon Island is the largest uninhabited island in the world.

Day itinerary:

Austere, remote and a rather severe, Devon Island is as close the closest thing to Mars on planet Earth. The rocky terrain, dry, cold climate and 14-mile wide crater on the north of the island have made it home for a team of research scientists from NASA, who live in the small research station during the Arctic summer. Other than these few men and women, Devon Island is completely unpeopled, and the largest uninhabited island in the world. There was human habitation as recently as 1951, when a Canadian Mounted Police post that had been on the island since 1924 to monitor illegal activities such as whaling closed. At 320 miles long and 80–100 miles wide, it is the largest of the Parry Islands. Dundas Harbour is found in the south of the island. Then island is set in the icy Arctic Ocean, south of Ellesmere Island and west of Baffin Bay. This make it Canada’s sixth largest island. Discovered by English explorer William Baffin in 1616, the island did not make it on to any maps until William Edward Parry’s exploration of the Arctic in 1820. Despite the desolate conditions, the island does show signs of having sustained human life as many as 3,000 years ago, with the remains of a Thule settlement dating back to 1000 A.D., including tent rings, middens and a gravesite providing testament to the fact. The island is named Talluruti in local Inuktitut language, literally translating as “a woman’s chin with tattoos on it”, as from a distance the deep crevasses resemble traditional facial tattoos.

Day 16: Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut
Day 18: Lower Savage Islands, Nunavut

Day itinerary:

The Lower Savage Islands are a small group of islands off of the southeastern tip of Baffin Island and a common location for polar bears to be found during the summer months. With plenty of land to roam while giving each other a wide berth plus opportunities to feed it seems perhaps bears can be found here as the ice vanishes with the summer season’s warming temperatures.

Day 19: Monumental Island, Baffin Islands, Nunavut

Monumental Island in Davis Strait was named by Arctic explorer Charles Francis Hall as a tribute to the memory of Sir John Franklin who died in his quest to find the Northwest Passage. The island is offshore of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago of the territory of Nunavut. Around the shoreline scores of Black Guillemots dive and fish for little Arctic cods and capelins. Successful birds fly off with a minnow grasped tightly in their beaks. On a far larger scale, it is possible to find groups of walruses with their impressive tusks along the shores of the island. However, the coup de grâce is to spot a polar bear’s white silhouette against the dark background of the bedrock on Monumental Island.

Day itinerary:

Monumental Island is a splinter of ancient metamorphic rock, hunching in the frigid waters of the Davis Strait, defying the ocean and ice around it. Named to honour the legendary Polar Explorer Sir John Franklin, the island displays at times displays everything Nunavut has to offer, in an ocean studded with vast icebergs drifting across from Greenland. Monumental Island is a well known den site for polar bears, the icon of the Arctic; there is a good chance to see mother bears with cubs on the island, as the bears become trapped by the lack of summer ice, using the island as a base to hunt until the ice returns in the Autumn. Seeing the white silhouette of a polar bear against the ancient black rock and autumn tundra colours is an experience that will remain long after returning on board. Groups of harp seals are a common sight in the waters around Monumental Island, and can be very curious, often swimming very close to investigate new objects such as boats. There are several sites on the island also used as haul out sites for the charismatic Atlantic Walrus. These vast animals are surprisingly gentle and skittish, and can often be observed caring for their calves on the rock bluffs while keeping a careful watch for polar bears. Almost nowhere else in Nunavut can the charismatic wildlife of the Arcticbe observed in such a stunning setting.

Day 19: Lady Franklin Island, Nunavut

Named in honour of Sir John Franklin’s widow, the lonely and uninhabited Lady Franklin Island lies off of Baffin Island’s Hall Peninsula at the entrance to Cumberland Sound. The island is named for the wife of Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer who died trying to discover the Northwest Passage. The geology of the island is striking with vertical cliffs of Archean rocks, likely to be some of the oldest stone in Canada. The waters around Lady Franklin Island offer an abundance seabirds, ducks, seals, and walrus. With a bit of luck it is possible to see Atlantic Puffins here and perhaps even a rare Sabine’s Gull.

ONBOARD DRESS CODE

To help you prepare for your voyage, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about what to pack and what to wear while onboard.

Find about more in regards to what to pack here.

ASHORE DRESS CODE

The right gear is essential for enjoying the whole experience of your Silversea Expedition without the limitations of weather and other conditions of each remote destination. Clothing that can be layered to accommodate different temperatures is most versatile and comfortable.

The key to dressing for a warm climate is to wear light-colored, loosefitting clothing made of natural fibers. Bright yellows, reds, and whites might attract wasps in some areas when you’re out in the sun. To protect yourself from the sun, make sure to pack a Wide-brimmed hat with chin strap and polarized sunglasses.

Additionally, bring sleeved quick-drying rashguards for water activities, along with your swimwear. Closed-toe water shoes are necessary for wet landings. If you have any sensitive electronic equipment, it’s recommended that you bring appropriate protective cases.

A detailed packing list is provided here.

Silversea visits ports around the world, including some of the most remote locations available for cruise ships, which significantly vary their ability to accommodate guests with disabilities including those in wheelchairs.

Master of the vessel make a final determination for all concerned guests regarding the advisability of providing such assistance or disembarking guests or mobility equipment taking into account all appropriate factors, including the port’s conditions, weather conditions, security conditions, and the equipment to be disembarked.

Itineraries on a Silversea expedition voyage offer many expedition activities that will require guests to have good mobility and be in good overall health.

Some expedition activities may require prolonged periods of physical activity, including standing, walking, hiking, climbing, swimming, diving, or negotiating uneven or slippery terrain. Medical Facilties

Medical Facilties

The medical services and medication on board the Vessel is extremely limited and all guests are required to bring an adequate supply of any specific medication needed. All guests will be charged for use of the medical facilities. It is therefore recommended that guests have full travel insurance to cover any medical costs incurred onboard.

Special Assistance

Please note that you are required to complete the special assistance questionnaire found in My Silversea, Guest information Form, Special requests Tab at Silversea.com.

Health Questionnaire

During the boarding process, you will be asked to complete a health acknowledgment form.

Inoculations

Generally, inoculations are not required in most areas where Silversea travels. However, any requirements that may apply are subject to change so we recommend you verify current guidelines with your travel agent before departure. Please note that when travelling to countries which do require vaccinations, written verification will be needed. Before taking any trip overseas, it is wise to check with your doctor, especially if you are under a doctor’s care.

Prescription Medication

For your convenience and wellbeing, you must bring a sufficient supply of any prescription medicine you may need. Prescriptions cannot be refilled onboard, and usually cannot be refilled overseas. To prevent delays in clearing customs, it is also a good idea to travel with a doctor’s letter explaining your prescription medication is required for your continued health. It is also recommended that the medicine remains in its original container with the original pharmacy label intact.

Special Medical Conditions

At Silversea, your health and safety are our priority. If you have any medical conditions that may require our attention, or should you needoxygen for medical reasons while on board, we kindly ask you to provide a written notification at least 60 days before your voyage to the email address specialservices@silversea.com or Fax at 954-356-5881. If you prefer, you may mail Silversea Special Services, 1050 Caribbean Way, 5th floor, Miami FL 33131.

Baggage Allowance

Luggage allowance guidelines/fees vary by airline, airport and/or class of service. Airlines are strictly enforcing these policies and you may be required to pay additional charges at check-in should the weight and size of your luggage be outside the airline’s set policy and/or the number of pieces exceeds the free luggage allowance. Many airlines limit each piece of luggage to 23 kg (50 lbs) or less. Since the airlines change their policies frequently, we strongly recommend that you or your travel/agent contact the air carrier(s) directly for the most up-to-date baggage allowance policies and weight/size restrictions. These policies are updated regularly

Minors & Childcare

Minors & Childcare

Silversea cruise guidelines state that children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult aged 21 or over, in the same or a connecting suite, for the duration of the voyage. Each suite that includes a minor must have at least one adult aged 21 or over present. If the adult accompanying the minor is not their parent, a Parental Consent Guardianship Form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian and received by Silversea prior to sailing. Please contact our Special Services Department at SpecialServices@Silversea.com for a Parental Consent Form.

Guests must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol. Silversea reserves the right to refuse service to anyone who, in its sole judgment, may be under the influence of alcohol or in any circumstance necessary to preserve the health and safety of guests and crew.

Silversea cannot accommodate infants less than six months of age and reserves the right to limit the number of children less than three years of age (Silver Endeavour, Silver Cloud, Silver Origin and Silver Wind cannot accommodate children under the age of 5 years). Parents are required to sign a notarized waiver prior to sailing to grant a valid booking for children ages between 6 months and 1 year old. A signed and notarized waiver will be required for all children of these ages.

Although Silversea accepts guests over the age of 6 months (over the age of 5 years for Silversea Expeditions), there are no special programs for children on board our ships, and Silversea does not provide childcare, entertainment, or supervision. Silversea reserves the right to limit the number of children less than 3 years of age.

Children under the age of 8 years are permitted to participate in suitable Shore Excursions or shuttle services only if the vehicles are equipped with the correct safety harness and seating equipment. Child harnesses and secure seating cannot be guaranteed. Silversea reserves the right to refuse children under 8 years old on any tour on the basis of safety. Guests may use their own approved safety seat, booster seat, or harness, provided it is compatible with the local touring vehicle and can properly secure the child.

To ensure guest safety and comfort, the following minimum ages apply to expedition activities:

    • Zodiac Cruises: Minimum age 5 years, accompanied by an adult.
    • Snorkeling: Minimum age 12 years, accompanied by an adult.
    • Kayaking: Minimum age 14 years when accompanied by an adult, or 16 years to participate solo.
    • Polar Plunge: Minimum age 12 years, accompanied by an adult.

As Silversea does not provide childcare services, an adult family member must remain onboard with any child who does not meet the minimum age requirements.

    Zodiac Landing Craft

    Zodiac Landing Craft

Zodiac boats are allowing you to explore places that would otherwise be inaccessible. To reach destinations where there are no piers and for islands surrounded by shallow waters, Zodiacs are the perfect solution. These rigid boats are specifically designed for nature study, and are very rugged, as well as safe, sturdy and durable. They are easy to board, whether at the ship or ashore, and are operated by highly trained crew. A Zodiac is an exceptionally buoyant rubber boat with an inflatable hull of multiple air-filled compartments, a feature that allows the Zodiac to float even should a compartment become deflated. A low centre of gravity makes Zodiacs very stable. Zodiacs are also agile, allowing them to easily come alongside the vessel, and to manoeuvre over reefs and between narrow passages. You will participate in a complete Zodiac familiarisation session upon embarkation during a briefing section held by the Expedition team. Please review these instructions carefully prior to your training session and throughout your Silversea Expedition. Guests will be divided into Zodiac disembarkation groups and will be disembarked in a rotating order. To avoid congestion and confusion, do not proceed to the disembarkation area until your group has been called.

    • Silversea’s Zodiac drivers have all had extensive training and experience. They are experts in this aspect of your expedition voyage. Follow their instruction at all times when onboard.
    • “Dry Landing” means you will disembark the Zodiac at a dock or other landing platform.
    • “Wet Landing” means you will need to step into the water and wade to shore – wear rubber boots or reef/water shoes (for tropical voyages).
    • You will be advised of the local weather conditions and the kind of landing (dry or wet) in order to dress with the appropriate clothing and footwear.
    • Wear waterproof outerwear — regardless of whether a wet or dry landing.
    • Wear the safety vest provided.
    • Wear sun protection, especially a high-factor sunscreen and dark, polarised sunglasses.
    • Pack your non-waterproof items (camera, binoculars, personal items, etc.) in zip-seal bags, and then place in your personal backpack or complimentary Silversea Expedition backpack.
    • Wear your backpack on your back. All other equipment should be handed to the staff/crew member at the top of the gangway before boarding the boats. This will allow your hands to be free for boarding the Zodiac. You will receive your equipment again once you are in the boat and should place it on the floor in front of you so your hands are free to hold onto the ropes. This procedure will be reversed when exiting.
    • When embarking and disembarking the Zodiac, firmly grasp the wrist of the staff/crew member that is waiting to assist you before stepping aboard/ashore.
    • Remain seated at all times whilst aboard, until otherwise instructed.

      Day 21: Nuuk (Godthaab)

      Wheelchair Availability and Access

Silversea visits ports around the world, including some of the most remote locations available for cruise ships, which significantly vary their ability to accommodate guests with disabilities including those in wheelchairs.

Silversea will attempt to arrange alternative transportation for guests with limited mobility to access port facilities, where available. In each case, the

Master of the vessel make a final determination for all concerned guests regarding the advisability of providing such assistance or disembarking guests or mobility equipment taking into account all appropriate factors, including the port’s conditions, weather conditions, security conditions, and the equipment to be disembarked.

      Guests with Reduced Mobility

Itineraries on a Silversea expedition voyage offer many expedition activities that will require guests to have good mobility and be in good overall health.

Some expedition activities may require prolonged periods of physical activity, including standing, walking, hiking, climbing, swimming, diving, or negotiating uneven or slippery terrain. If at any point prior to booking or otherwise sailing on your voyage, you become concerned about your fitness to travel, please contact your local Silversea office, travel agent, or email us directly at specialservices@silversea.com to let us know.

Please note that an oxygen concentrator is the only form of oxygen equipment that Silversea ships can accommodate. Guests wishing to bring their portable oxygen tanks must obtain prior written authorisation from Silversea, as restrictions may apply.
