Auckland is called the City of Sails, and visitors flying in will see why. On the East Coast is the Waitemata Harbour—a Māori word meaning sparkling waters—which is bordered by the Hauraki Gulf, an aquatic playground peppered with small islands where many Aucklanders can be found “mucking around in boats.”Not surprisingly, Auckland has some 70,000 boats. About one in four households in Auckland has a seacraft of some kind, and there are 102 beaches within an hour’s drive; during the week many are quite empty. Even the airport is by the water; it borders the Manukau Harbour, which also takes its name from the Māori language and means solitary bird.According to Māori tradition, the Auckland isthmus was originally peopled by a race of giants and fairy folk. When Europeans arrived in the early 19th century, however, the Ngāti-Whātua tribe was firmly in control of the region. The British began negotiations with the Ngāti-Whātua in 1840 to purchase the isthmus and establish the colony’s first capital. In September of that year the British flag was hoisted to mark the township’s foundation, and Auckland remained the capital until 1865, when the seat of government was moved to Wellington. Aucklanders expected to suffer from the shift; it hurt their pride but not their pockets. As the terminal for the South Sea shipping routes, Auckland was already an established commercial center. Since then the urban sprawl has made this city of approximately 1.3 million people one of the world’s largest geographically.A couple of days in the city will reveal just how developed and sophisticated Auckland is—the Mercer City Survey 2012 saw it ranked as the third-highest city for quality of life—though those seeking a New York in the South Pacific will be disappointed. Auckland is more get-up and go-outside than get-dressed-up and go-out. That said, most shops are open daily, central bars and a few nightclubs buzz well into the wee hours, especially Thursday through Saturday, and a mix of Māori, Pacific people, Asians, and Europeans contributes to the cultural milieu. Auckland has the world’s largest single population of Pacific Islanders living outside their home countries, though many of them live outside the central parts of the city and in Manukau to the south. The Samoan language is the second most spoken in New Zealand. Most Pacific people came to New Zealand seeking a better life. When the plentiful, low-skilled work that attracted them dried up, the dream soured, and the population has suffered with poor health and education. Luckily, policies are now addressing that, and change is slowly coming. The Pacifica Festival in March is the region’s biggest cultural event, attracting thousands to Western Springs. The annual Pacific Island Secondary Schools’ Competition, also in March, sees young Pacific Islander and Asian students compete in traditional dance, drumming, and singing. This event is open to the public.At the geographical center of Auckland city is the 1,082-foot Sky Tower, a convenient landmark for those exploring on foot and some say a visible sign of the city’s naked aspiration. It has earned nicknames like the Needle and the Big Penis—a counterpoint to a poem by acclaimed New Zealand poet James K. Baxter, which refers to Rangitoto Island as a clitoris in the harbor.The Waitemata Harbour has become better known since New Zealand staged its first defense of the America’s Cup in 2000 and the successful Louis Vuitton Pacific Series in early 2009. The first regatta saw major redevelopment of the waterfront. The area, where many of the city’s most popular bars, cafés, and restaurants are located, is now known as Viaduct Basin or, more commonly, the Viaduct. A recent expansion has created another area, Wynyard Quarter, which is slowly adding restaurants.These days, Auckland is still considered too bold and brash for its own good by many Kiwis who live “south of the Bombay Hills,” the geographical divide between Auckland and the rest of New Zealand (barring Northland). “Jafa,” an acronym for “just another f—ing Aucklander,” has entered the local lexicon; there’s even a book out called Way of the Jafa: A Guide to Surviving Auckland and Aucklanders. A common complaint is that Auckland absorbs the wealth from the hard work of the rest of the country. Most Aucklanders, on the other hand, still try to shrug and see it as the parochial envy of those who live in small towns. But these internal identity squabbles aren’t your problem. You can enjoy a well-made coffee in almost any café, or take a walk on a beach—knowing that within 30 minutes’ driving time you could be cruising the spectacular harbor, playing a round at a public golf course, or even walking in subtropical forest while listening to the song of a native tûî bird.

The earthquake that struck Napier at 10:46 am on February 3, 1931, was—at 7.8 on the Richter scale—the largest quake ever recorded in New Zealand. The coastline was wrenched upward several feet. Almost all the town’s brick buildings collapsed; many people were killed on the footpaths as they rushed outside. The quake triggered fires throughout town, and with water mains shattered, little could be done to stop the blazes that devoured the remaining wooden structures. Only a few buildings survived (the Public Service Building with its neoclassical pillars is one), and the death toll was well over 100.The surviving townspeople set up tents and cookhouses in Nelson Park, and then tackled the city’s reconstruction at a remarkable pace. In the rush to rebuild, Napier went mad for art deco, the bold, geometric style that had burst on the global design scene in 1925. Now a walk through the art deco district, concentrated between Emerson, Herschell, Dalton, and Browning streets, is a stylistic immersion. The decorative elements are often above the ground floors, so keep your eyes up.

Arriving in Napier, it can feel as though the clock has paused in the 1930s. After a devastating earthquake in 1931, the city centre was almost entirely rebuilt in the Art Deco style of the era, with clean lines, pastel facades and geometric detailing. Today, its palm-lined streets, sunlit promenades and carefully preserved buildings create one of the world’s finest concentrations of authentic Art Deco architecture, complemented by a relaxed café culture and easy access to Hawke’s Bay’s acclaimed vineyards. Later, after sailing, visit the open bridge on Deck 7 to meet the Captain and navigational team, and gain first-hand insight into a Scenic Discovery Yacht’s state-of-the-art technology from one of the most inspiring vantage points on board.
The maritime township of Picton (population 4,000) lies at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound and is the arrival point for ferries from the North Island, as well as a growing number of international cruise ships. It plays a major role in providing services and transport by water taxi to a multitude of remote communities in the vast area of islands, peninsulas, and waterways that make up the Marlborough Sounds Maritime Park. There’s plenty to do in town, with crafts markets in summer, historical sights to see, and walking tracks to scenic lookouts over the sounds. The main foreshore is lined by London Quay, which looks up Queen Charlotte Sound to the bays beyond. High Street runs down to London Quay from the hills, and between them these two streets make up the center of town.

It’s worth waking up early this morning so you can experience the Marlborough Sounds as you sail into Picton. Spend the day in Picton, a picturesque town that looks almost tropical with its towering palm trees and clear turquoise water. It’s just a short cruise to the city of Nelson, one of the sunniest cities in New Zealand. You’ll arrive in Kaikoura later this morning. This tiny town sits in a spectacular natural environment, flanked by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura Range on the other. The town began life as a whaling station in the mid 1800s; visit the oldest surviving building, Fyffe House, or the Kaikoura Museum to learn more about its history. It’s also an ideal place for wildlife encounters. Whales, fur seals and dolphins live permanently in these waters, and an impressive array of seabirds fill the air, including the mighty albatross. This evening, relax at the Observation Lounge with a book, or gather with fellow guests at the Scenic Lounge Bar to share the day's wildlife encounters.

Arrive this morning in Akaroa, site of New Zealand’s only successful French settlement. Established by French settlers in 1840, it still carries its heritage lightly with French street names, characterful cottages and a Gallic note in some of its cafés and cuisine. Akaroa also looks over a sheltered harbour frequented by rare Hector’s dolphins, and is framed by an historic lighthouse and rolling green hillsides. Despite being discovered by Cook more than 240 years ago, Dusky Sound is one of the few truly untouched destinations left on earth. New Zealand fiord country along with Fiordland National Park is one of New Zealand’s premier attractions. Incredibly beautiful, wild and remote, the region is an intriguing combination of rugged mountain ranges, dense rainforest, solitary alpine lakes, sparkling rivers and splashing waterfalls. Much of Fiordland is virtually unexplored wilderness and still the habitat of rare birds. As the ship cruises the beautiful Doubtful, Dusky and Milford Sounds, experience the majestic fiordland of South Island’s western coast. Captain James Cook sailed along this coast in 1770 and again in 1773, when he anchored at Dusky Sound for a rest and ship repair. Doubtful Sound is one of the region’s most majestic fiords. It is ten times larger than Milford Sound. As the ship cruises into Hall Arm, gaze at vertical cliffs and mighty waterfalls plunging over sheer rock faces. In fine weather, mountains and greenery are reflected in the protected waters of the fiord. Farther north lies Milford Sound. Far from any populated area, Milford Sound is famous for its grandeur and spectacular beauty. It is perhaps the best example of New Zealand’s renowned classic landscape of steep granite peaks framing glacier-carved inlets with mirrored reflections on dark waters. Dominating the scene is Milford’s landmark, the triangular pinnacle of Mitre Peak. Along the sheer cliffs, several waterfalls tumble more than 500 feet (154 metres) into the sheltered Sound. Only a few moored boats and a scattering of buildings at the head of the Sound break the unity of mountains, forest and water. This spectacular beauty and unspoiled setting is yours to enjoy as the ship cruises Milford Sound.

The rugged West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island offers some of the country’s most stunning scenery. You’ll cruise through Fiordland National Park, which covers more than 1.2 million hectares of granite peaks, shimmering lakes, deep black fjords and spectacular waterfalls. Rudyard Kipling described Milford Sound as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. The best way to experience the sound is from the water and today Scenic Eclipse II will cruise slowly through this spectacular place, coming close to land so you can admire the waterfalls tumbling from 1,000-metre cliffs and look out for seals sunning themselves on the rocks. You may like to join fellow guests on the Sky Deck to watch the magic unfold over a cocktail.
Stewart Island is home to New Zealand’s newest national park, Rakiura National Park. The third and most southerly of New Zealand’s main islands, Stewart Island is separated from the South Island by the 24-km (15-miles) Foveaux Strait. Its original Māori name, Te Punga O Te Waka a Maui, means “the anchor stone of Maui’s canoe.” Māori mythology says the island’s landmass held the god Maui’s canoe secure while he and his crew raised the great fish—the North Island. Today the island is more commonly referred to by its other Māori name, Rakiura, which means “the land of the glowing skies.” This refers to the spectacular sunrises and sunsets and to the southern lights, or aurora australis. The European name of Stewart Island dates back to 1809. It memorializes an officer William W. Stewart on an early sealing vessel, the Pegasus, who was the first to chart the island. The island covers some 1,700 square km (650 square miles). It measures about 75 km (46 miles) from north to south and about the same distance across at its widest point. On the coastline, sharp cliffs rise from a succession of sheltered bays and beaches. In the interior, forested hills rise gradually toward the west side of the island. Seals and penguins frequent the coast, and the island’s prolific birdlife includes a number of species rarely seen in any other part of the country. In fact, this is the surest place to see a kiwi. The Stewart Island brown kiwi, or tokoeka, is the largest species of this kind of bird. Unlike their mainland cousins, these kiwis can be seen during the day as well as at night. It’s a rare and amusing experience to watch these pear-shape birds scampering on a remote beach as they feed on sand hoppers and grubs. Māori have visited Stewart Island for centuries. Archaeologists’ studies of 13th-century Māori middens (refuse heaps) indicate that the island was once a rich, seasonal resource for hunting, fishing, and gathering seafood. A commonly eaten delicacy at that time, the titi, also known as the muttonbird, still occasionally appears on menus. In the early 19th century, explorers, sealers, missionaries, and miners settled the island. They were followed by fishermen and sawmillers who established settlements around the edges of Paterson Inlet and Halfmoon and Horseshoe bays. In the 1920s Norwegians set up a whaling enterprise, and many descendants of these seafaring people remain. Fishing, aquaculture, and tourism are now the mainstays of the island’s economy. Even by New Zealand standards, Stewart Island is remote, raw, and untouched. The appeal is its seclusion, its relaxed way of life, and its untouched quality. Stewart Island is not for everyone: if you must have shopping malls, casinos, or umbrella drinks on the beach, don’t come here. Visitors should be prepared for the fact that Stewart Island can be chilly, windy, and rainy, even in the middle of summer.

European whaling ships first called at Otago Province during the early decades of the 1800s, yielding a mixed response from the native Māori. In 1848 Dunedin was settled, and by the mid-1860s the city was the economic hub of the Otago gold rush. Dunedin’s historical wealth endures in such institutions as the University of Otago, the oldest in the country. But if any region can bring out the bird-watcher in you, this is it; the area is home to the Royal Albatross and yellow-eyed penguins.

Situated almost equidistant between Christchurch and Dunedin, Timaru has oft been overlooked by those just needing to get from one city to another but more fool them! The town’s name comes from the Māori name Te Maru, meaning ‘place of shelter’ and the pretty town reveals not only stunning Middle Earth landscape and views to write home about, but an intact Victorian / Edwardian shopping precinct with many of the building being built in local volcanic bluestone. Understandably, beach life is very important here and the long ribbons of white sandy beaches and clean seas are perfect for a swimming, sunning and spoiling yourself! Voted one of New Zealand’s top 10 most loved beaches, Caroline Bay is simply a treasure. Built on the rolling hills created from the lava flows of the extinct Mt Horrible volcano, Timaru is a melting pot of culture, history, adventure and dramatic scenery. Art lovers too will not be left wanting as the city’s art gallery holds the third largest public art collection in the South Island. Walking enthusiasts will not want to miss one of the many walks along the coast or rivers that vary from short paved paths – ideal for pushchairs and wheelchairs to longer, more strenuous hikes. Well signposted and maintained, these tracks are especially beautiful in the autumn when the leaves are turning colour. And do not forget to be on the lookout for penguins, which will happily waddle alongside you some of the way!

Suite names and amenities are the same across both Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II, however, both have been thoughtfully curated to suit the cruising experience of these ships.

Chef's Table @ Elements
Located within Elements, dining at Chef’s Table is an exclusive, by invitation-only degustation experience. Accommodating a group of just 10 guests, this 11-course degustation meal is paired with premium beverages. The Executive Chef and the culinary team will enthral you as they present each dish, explaining the world-class techniques and ingredient origins used in each creation.
Koko's Asian Fusion
Enjoy contemporary Asian fusion in a vibrant ambience. Traditional ingredients and innovative techniques interweave to celebrate the diverse flavours of Asia. Up to 26 guests can be seated for dinner service at either regular tables or sunken seating inspired by traditional Japanese dining practices. Savour the excitement of an interactive dining experience as our expert chefs craft dishes inspired by the lively markets of Asia, India and the Middle East before your eyes. For only eight guests in each seating, this exclusive Teppanyaki grill experience will be a highlight of your culinary journey.
Sushi & Sake Bar @ Koko's
Indulge in a genuine culinary experience as skilled chefs handcraft the freshest sushi, including exquisite options with vegan salmon and tuna. Catering for up to 18 guests, you can dine along the ocean view benchtop or at the bar, watching as your chefs hand-make your meal.
Azure Bar & Café
Visit the Azure Bar & Café for relaxed, all-day grazing. Take in the spectacular views from the indoor or outdoor terrace seating. Book in to see the chef create an array of authentic dishes from the regions you’re cruising through. Located on Deck 5 with a special cooking station and large TV screen, you’ll catch every detail.
In-Suite Dining
When the mood strikes to dine in the privacy of your suite, your personal butler can arrange everything. Choose from the 24-hour in-suite dining and beverage menus. Your butler will also ensure your in-suite mini-bar is re-stocked daily to your liking. With an in-suite espresso machine, savour your morning coffee in the solitude of your suite or soak up the sunlight on your verandah or terrace.
Private Dining Experiences
There are many intimate and relaxed venues which provide the option of private dining at no additional cost.
Groups can dine at a restaurant of their choice or in the privacy of their suite. Night Market @ Koko’s offers private dining for up to eight guests and Chef’s Table is the ultimate degustation dining by invitation-only experience for 10 guests.

You will be supplied with everything you’ll need to fully immerse yourself in the journeys that await. On polar Expedition Voyages a Scenic Eclipse parka and water bottle will be in your suite on arrival, yours to take home. Observation Lounge & Library
The Observation Lounge & Library is a serene haven for guests seeking a peaceful retreat to read and observe the world. While we don’t serve food in this tranquil space, you can still enjoy a variety of beverages as you unwind and watch the world go by.

Smoking Policy
Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II are non-smoking vessels in all public areas. There is a designated outside smoking area on Deck 6 for guests. All suites, including suite verandah’s and terraces are non-smoking.
Special Dietary Requirements
Scenic accommodates special dietary requirements to the best of our ability across our river cruises, ocean voyages and land journeys where applicable. If you have special dietary requests, please notify us at the time of booking and inform your Cruise Director when you arrive.

Laundry
Scenic Eclipse II is equipped with a free self-service laundry located on Deck 3. It features washing machines, dryers, irons and ironing boards and is available 24 hours.
Wi-Fi
Complimentary Wi-Fi access is available on board some of our vessels. Please be aware that internet access may be limited or non-existent at certain times due to high demand from other users, or proximity to telecommunication services. We cannot guarantee that you will have full Wi-Fi coverage in your suite.
Dress Code
When you are relaxing on board, the dress code is smart casual and comfortable. Do not forget your swimsuits and exercise attire for the heated pools and plunge pools, the wellness areas and the gym, yoga and Pilates studio.
For evenings, while there are no formal nights, the recommended on board dress code is elegant casual for most restaurants. Suggested attire for women includes a dress, skirt or slacks with a sweater or blouse, for men, trousers / pants and a collared shirt. A tie and jacket are optional, but not required.
Language
The official language spoken on board is English. All officers, staff and crew as well as local guides and regional specialists speak fluent English. All announcements and lectures will be presented in English.
Children
Luxury expedition style cruising is not recommended for children under 12. Guests under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult and must share their accommodation with an adult. No children programs or babysitting services are available on board.
Medical Facilities
For your peace of mind, Scenic Eclipse is equipped with a medical centre offering primary care, staffed at all times by an on call doctor. You must advise us prior to finalising your booking of any pre-existing medical conditions that might increase your risk of requiring medical attention, affecting the normal conduct of the cruise and / or the enjoyment of other cruise guests.
It is important to note, however, that there are no hospitals or doctors available in polar and remote regions, and emergency evacuation is extremely difficult and expensive.
Cruising conditions can be unpredictable and rough waters may be encountered anytime. If you suffer from seasickness, please consult your Medical Practitioner before your cruise and always carry the recommended preventative medications. Our resident medical team can assist you with additional medication and services if required, with any relevant payments charged to your on board account.
Am I allowed to take prescription medication?
Yes, you are allowed to carry whatever prescription medication you require, and we’d recommend packing an ample supply that covers the duration of your cruise or tour. Due to strict drug laws in certain countries, make sure medication is carried in its original packaging with the prescription label clearly marked. When travelling through airports or border crossings, we’d recommend that you keep medication in your hand luggage ready for inspection.

Visitor Policy
In selected ports on request, visitors may be allowed on board. Visitation is not permitted on embarkation and disembarkation day. A visitor form is to be completed prior to the cruise. The guests will be informed once approved. Visitors will receive a visitor pass at ship’s gangway after they provide photo identification. Visitors will need to be accompanied at all times.

Discovery experiences can only be booked at the Excursion Centre on board and are subject to availability, regulatory approval and prevailing weather, marine and ice conditions and may be cancelled at short notice. Travel Information
Can Scenic arrange my passport and visas?
Scenic cannot arrange a passport or visas on your behalf, but our experienced Reservations Team may be able to advise you on the type of visas and documentation you need when visiting certain countries.
Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the conclusion of your trip. Please check your passport before departure and give yourself time to apply for a new one if this is required. Also, if the nationality on your passport differs from the country in which you currently reside, contact your local consulate to ensure you have the right documents for travel. Your holiday may be disrupted if you cannot provide valid documents at airports and border crossings.
Can Scenic organise my travel insurance?
No, Scenic is unable to provide travel insurance. We’d recommend that you arrange insurance cover that best suits you and covers you in the event of unforeseen circumstances. It’s also a good idea to take any documents relating to your insurance with you when you travel.

Accessibility
What fitness levels do cruises/tours require?
Due to the amount of excursions available during a Scenic cruise or tour, a reasonable level of fitness is required to take full advantage of each itinerary. You must be physically able and self-sufficient to undertake the cruise or tour you have booked, and/or travel with a companion who is able to provide any assistance you may require during your holiday. Some of the all-inclusive excursions offered require a reasonable level of fitness to complete, and you may be required to climb ramps and/or stairs.
Please also note that not all Scenic ships have a lift. Here is a list of the ships which have an elevator and their restrictions:
– Scenic Space-Ships in Europe have a lift which services the Diamond Deck and Sapphire Deck.
– Scenic Spirit has a lift which services all decks between the Diamond Deck and Gem Deck.
I’m pregnant – can I still travel on a river cruise, ocean voyage or land journey?
The majority of cruise operators recommend that pregnant women should not travel after the 28-week period. If you do decide to travel, you may be asked to provide a doctor’s certificate clarifying you’re fit to travel.
Do the ships provide mobility-wheelchair access?
We welcome passengers with medical conditions or disabilities and can provide mobility provisions when notified in writing of a person’s needs before boarding. However, please be aware that there may be limitations on board and during excursions. Some of our ships do not have elevators, and where there is an elevator on board it may not access all decks. While collapsible wheelchairs are permitted on board under appropriate circumstances, you must be able to climb up and down stairs on coaches, and some excursions may require you to negotiate cobblestones or climb steps.
In addition, standard suites and bathrooms have significant thresholds and cabin doors which limit access, meaning they may not be wide enough to allow access to many wheelchairs. Please speak to a member of our team about your requirements prior to booking so that we can offer information on mobility and access.
