Day 1: Sydney, New South Wales

Sydney, capital of New South Wales and one of Australia’s largest cities, is best known for its harbourfront Sydney Opera House, with a distinctive sail-like design. Massive Darling Harbour and the smaller Circular Quay port are hubs of waterside life, with the arched Harbour Bridge and esteemed Royal Botanic Garden nearby. Sydney Tower’s outdoor platform, the Skywalk, offers 360-degree views of the city and suburbs.

Day itinerary:

With its glorious harbour, lavish golden beaches and iconic landmarks, Sydney is Australia’s showpiece city. Creative and curious, discover the world-class cuisine, indigenous culture, and irresistible beach life that make Sydney one of the world’s most dynamic, exciting destinations. Sydney’s sparkling harbour is the heart of a richly cultural city. Overlooked by the metallic curves of the masterpiece of an Opera House, and that grand arched harbour bridge. Take it all in from the water, and admire the iconic landmarks, which are set before the city’s gleaming skyline backdrop. If you’re feeling adventurous, take the legendary climb up the smooth curve of the bridge – nicknamed the Coathanger – to soak in the shining city’s spread from a unique perspective. Spread out to tan on one of the world’s most famous stretches of sand – Bondi Beach. Restaurants and bars burble away in the background, while the sun beams down, and surfers curl and leap over pure rollers. Swim in spectacular salty ocean pools, or wander the beautiful Bondi to Coogee coastal walk for more of this sun-gorged stretch of prime coastline. Leaving the thrills of Australia’s largest city behind is surprisingly simple – take to the skies to be flown above skyscrapers and rippling ribbons of waves, out to majestic peaks, sheer cliffs and iconic rock formations – like the Three Sisters of the Blue Mountains. Or, drop in on wildlife sanctuaries caring for the country’s animals – from hopping kangaroos to adorably cute, cuddly koalas.

Day 3: Hobart, Tasmania

Straddling the Derwent River at the foot of Mt. Wellington’s forested slopes, Hobart was founded as a penal settlement in 1803. It’s the second-oldest city in the country after Sydney, and it certainly rivals its mainland counterpart as Australia’s most beautiful state capital. Close-set colonial brick-and-sandstone shops and homes line the narrow, quiet streets, creating a genteel setting for this historic city of 215,000. Life revolves around the broad Derwent River port, one of the deepest harbors in the world. Here warehouses that once stored Hobart’s major exports of fruit, wool, and corn and products from the city’s former whaling fleet still stand alongside the wharf today.Hobart sparkles between Christmas and New Year’s—summer Down Under—during the annual Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race. The event dominates conversations among Hobart’s citizens, who descend on Constitution Dock to welcome the yachts and join in the boisterous festivities of the crews. The New Year also coincides with the Tastes of Tasmania Festival, when the dockside area comes alive with the best of Tasmanian food and wine on offer in numerous cafés, bars, and waterfront stalls. Otherwise, Hobart is a placid city whose nightlife is largely confined to excellent restaurants, jazz clubs, and the action at the Wrest Point Casino in Sandy Bay.The Hobart Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre hours are weekdays 8:30–5:30 and Saturday 9–5.

Day itinerary:

Mount Wellington’s looming cloud-wisped form is an ever-present sight as you explore booming Hobart the cosmopolitan capital of Australia’s most southerly state. A former British penal colony nowadays Australia’s second-oldest city is a place to live the free and easy life. Encircled by dramatic cliffs landscaped gardens and rolling vineyards Hobart is also well stacked with cultural pursuits including museums and respected – if controversial – galleries plastering new and old art to their walls. With fresh sea breezes and a fabulous location Hobart is a creative place where you can browse the produce of local artisans in Saturday’s massive Salamanca Market – which draws visitors from all across Tasmania and beyond. Eat at waterfront restaurants or rise up Mount Wellington’s slopes to appreciate the remoteness of Hobart’s location. From this elevated platform you can look down across views of flowing forests undulating mountains and endless ocean swallowing up the city. Further away animal sanctuaries introduce you to the island’s famous inhabitants including the famous Tasmanian devil. Thirsty? Hobart has a long brewing tradition – so enjoy a refreshing ale poured from the country’s oldest brewery. The climate’s blend of generous sunshine and cool Antarctic breezes helps Hobart to produce its acclaimed wines and thick clumps of pinot noir grapes hang from vineyards dotted along the valleys nearby. Taste the wines accompanied by a platter of artisan cheese and sausage.

Day 7: Milford Sound

New Zealand fiord country along with Fiordland National Park is one of New Zealand’s premier attractions. Incredibly beautiful, wild and remote, the region is an intriguing combination of rugged mountain ranges, dense rainforest, solitary alpine lakes, sparkling rivers and splashing waterfalls. Much of Fiordland is virtually unexplored wilderness and still the habitat of rare birds. As the ship cruises the beautiful Doubtful, Dusky and Milford Sounds, experience the majestic fiordland of South Island’s western coast. Captain James Cook sailed along this coast in 1770 and again in 1773, when he anchored at Dusky Sound for a rest and ship repair. Doubtful Sound is one of the region’s most majestic fiords. It is ten times larger than Milford Sound. As the ship cruises into Hall Arm, gaze at vertical cliffs and mighty waterfalls plunging over sheer rock faces. In fine weather, mountains and greenery are reflected in the protected waters of the fiord. Farther north lies Milford Sound. Far from any populated area, Milford Sound is famous for its grandeur and spectacular beauty. It is perhaps the best example of New Zealand’s renowned classic landscape of steep granite peaks framing glacier-carved inlets with mirrored reflections on dark waters. Dominating the scene is Milford’s landmark, the triangular pinnacle of Mitre Peak. Along the sheer cliffs, several waterfalls tumble more than 500 feet (154 metres) into the sheltered Sound. Only a few moored boats and a scattering of buildings at the head of the Sound break the unity of mountains, forest and water. This spectacular beauty and unspoiled setting is yours to enjoy as the ship cruises Milford Sound.

Day itinerary:

Named after Milford Haven in Wales, Milford Sound is not a sound but a fjord, yet the name has stuck. In 1998 the Maori name Piopiotahi has been added and officially it should be written as Milford Sound/Piopiotahi. The local name refers to the extinct New Zealand Thrush (the piopio). Milford Sound sits within South Island’s Fiordland National Park, one of the four national parks forming the UNESCO World Heritage site “Te Wahipounamu” –pounamu being the local greenstone highly estimated for carvings by the Maori. The fjord has a length of approximately 16 kilometers and a depth of more than 290 meters. Steep cliffs, several impressive waterfalls and dense rainforest characterize the fjord. Halfway down the fjord is Stirling Falls, the second tallest. Near the end of the sound the U-shaped Sinbad Gully and the famous Mitre Peak which rises to a height of 1,692 meters can be seen, while on the eastern side is Lady Bowen Falls, at 162 meters the tallest of the falls. The Piopiotahi Marine Reserve protects the flora and fauna in the water. Apart from bottlenose dolphins in the fjord, New Zealand fur seals can be seen resting on Seal Rock on the northern shore, while on the opposite side is a Fiordland Crested Penguin site.

Day 7: Cruising Doubtful Sound

Day itinerary:

Located in the far southwest corner of New Zealand, Doubtful Sound was first named ͞Doubtful Harbor͟by Captain James Cook, who observed the inlet as he sailed past it and declined entering because it looked too tight for his ship. The place is often referred to as the ͞Sound of Silence͟ for its stillness and quiet visitors feel upon entering the fjord. Doubtful Sound is the deepest and second-longest fjord in the region (421 meters deep and 40 km long), second to nearby Milford Sound. Doubtful Sound contains two separate layers of water: fresh water on the surface fed by mountain run-off, and salt water from the sea beneath. These waters do not mix, resulting in two contrasting layers with differing refractive properties that make it difficult for light to penetrate. This phenomenon makes it possible for deep-sea species that are more light-sensitive, such as black coral, to flourish in relatively shallow waters. There are three distinguishable arms to Doubtful Sound all extending southward. The shortest is First Arm at 6km long, followed by the longest Crooked Arm at 14 km, and Hall Arm at 8 km long. Cruise these arms of Doubtful Sound to see its spectacular waterfalls, such as Helena Falls (220 meters high) and the impressive Browne Falls cascades (619 meters). Keep your eyes open for wildlife such as Fjordland crested penguins, bottlenose dolphins and New Zealand fur seals which may be spotted on the small islets that create the entry point to the fjord.

Day 8: Oban, Stewart Island

Stewart Island is home to New Zealand’s newest national park, Rakiura National Park. The third and most southerly of New Zealand’s main islands, Stewart Island is separated from the South Island by the 24-km (15-miles) Foveaux Strait. Its original Māori name, Te Punga O Te Waka a Maui, means “the anchor stone of Maui’s canoe.” Māori mythology says the island’s landmass held the god Maui’s canoe secure while he and his crew raised the great fish—the North Island. Today the island is more commonly referred to by its other Māori name, Rakiura, which means “the land of the glowing skies.” This refers to the spectacular sunrises and sunsets and to the southern lights, or aurora australis. The European name of Stewart Island dates back to 1809. It memorializes an officer William W. Stewart on an early sealing vessel, the Pegasus, who was the first to chart the island. The island covers some 1,700 square km (650 square miles). It measures about 75 km (46 miles) from north to south and about the same distance across at its widest point. On the coastline, sharp cliffs rise from a succession of sheltered bays and beaches. In the interior, forested hills rise gradually toward the west side of the island. Seals and penguins frequent the coast, and the island’s prolific birdlife includes a number of species rarely seen in any other part of the country. In fact, this is the surest place to see a kiwi. The Stewart Island brown kiwi, or tokoeka, is the largest species of this kind of bird. Unlike their mainland cousins, these kiwis can be seen during the day as well as at night. It’s a rare and amusing experience to watch these pear-shape birds scampering on a remote beach as they feed on sand hoppers and grubs. Māori have visited Stewart Island for centuries. Archaeologists’ studies of 13th-century Māori middens (refuse heaps) indicate that the island was once a rich, seasonal resource for hunting, fishing, and gathering seafood. A commonly eaten delicacy at that time, the titi, also known as the muttonbird, still occasionally appears on menus. In the early 19th century, explorers, sealers, missionaries, and miners settled the island. They were followed by fishermen and sawmillers who established settlements around the edges of Paterson Inlet and Halfmoon and Horseshoe bays. In the 1920s Norwegians set up a whaling enterprise, and many descendants of these seafaring people remain. Fishing, aquaculture, and tourism are now the mainstays of the island’s economy. Even by New Zealand standards, Stewart Island is remote, raw, and untouched. The appeal is its seclusion, its relaxed way of life, and its untouched quality. Stewart Island is not for everyone: if you must have shopping malls, casinos, or umbrella drinks on the beach, don’t come here. Visitors should be prepared for the fact that Stewart Island can be chilly, windy, and rainy, even in the middle of summer.

Day itinerary:

Within touching distance of the South Island’s southern tip the majority of New Zealand’s third-largest island is handed over to a beautiful sprawl of National Park. Taking its name from the Māori word ‘Rakiura’ which means ‘land of the glowing skies’ this is an island sanctuary of radiant beauty. Sunsets and sunrise are magical but it’s the swirling patterns of lights that dance across the heavens above that enchant above all else – as the southern hemisphere’s version of the northern lights dazzles overhead. Slow the pace on this island of leisurely fishing villages and swirling Maori legend. The majority of Stewart Island has been claimed by dense forests which conceal wonderful wildlife watching opportunities and reveal isolated coves and dramatic cliffs. Bring your hiking boots as with only 15 miles of road the best way to see the rugged beauty is by crunching along seaside trails. Coastal hikes along sweeping bays lead to viewpoints like Ackers Point or you can take to the sea’s waves to undulate gently offshore admiring the island’s coastline from the turquoise waters. Pleasure cruises along the scenic Paterson Inlet will take you out to islands teeming with life and animal activity. Stewart Island and its scattered skerries provide the perfect sanctuary for crowds of brilliant birdlife. Encounter everything from blue penguins to albatross and New Zealand’s national icon – wild kiwis.

Day 9: Port Chalmers

European whaling ships first called at Otago Province during the early decades of the 1800s, yielding a mixed response from the native Māori. In 1848 Dunedin was settled, and by the mid-1860s the city was the economic hub of the Otago gold rush. Dunedin’s historical wealth endures in such institutions as the University of Otago, the oldest in the country. But if any region can bring out the bird-watcher in you, this is it; the area is home to the Royal Albatross and yellow-eyed penguins.

Day itinerary:

The south-easterly coast of New Zealand’s wild southern island is a haven for outdoor adventures with masses of raw scenic beauty and thrilling coastline. Heading the Otago Harbour Dunedin is a cosmopolitan city of culture and architectural splendour with a distinctly tartan flare.Searing bagpipes echo down the streets in the Edinburgh of the South which wears its Scottish origins proudly. Gothic revival architecture is scattered liberally including the magnificent university – with its glorious clocktower – and the city’s grand cathedral. The railway station is perhaps the pick of this city’s many artistic structures. Its glowing gardens and pretty mosaics add extra detail to the elegant gingerbread building. The melodramatic coastline of the Otago Peninsula boasts dramatic cliffs and sea-sprayed beaches as well as an abundance of animals. Explore cliffs laced with tunnels and hidden walkways to get you up close and personal with Yellow-eyed penguins. Sea lions and seals also sprawl out on windswept beaches drifting in and out of indulgent dozes. Not that Dunedin is lacking a distinctly quirky personality of its own as showcased by the event where locals race thousands of chocolate orbs down the world’s steepest street – Baldwin Street. Museums in the city tell of Chinese influences as well as the stories of early Maori settlers. Round off an active day sampling a South Island institution – an icy beer from Speight’s Brewery.

Day 10: Timaru

Situated almost equidistant between Christchurch and Dunedin, Timaru has oft been overlooked by those just needing to get from one city to another but more fool them! The town’s name comes from the Māori name Te Maru, meaning ‘place of shelter’ and the pretty town reveals not only stunning Middle Earth landscape and views to write home about, but an intact Victorian / Edwardian shopping precinct with many of the building being built in local volcanic bluestone. Understandably, beach life is very important here and the long ribbons of white sandy beaches and clean seas are perfect for a swimming, sunning and spoiling yourself! Voted one of New Zealand’s top 10 most loved beaches, Caroline Bay is simply a treasure. Built on the rolling hills created from the lava flows of the extinct Mt Horrible volcano, Timaru is a melting pot of culture, history, adventure and dramatic scenery. Art lovers too will not be left wanting as the city’s art gallery holds the third largest public art collection in the South Island. Walking enthusiasts will not want to miss one of the many walks along the coast or rivers that vary from short paved paths – ideal for pushchairs and wheelchairs to longer, more strenuous hikes. Well signposted and maintained, these tracks are especially beautiful in the autumn when the leaves are turning colour. And do not forget to be on the lookout for penguins, which will happily waddle alongside you some of the way!

Day itinerary:

Named by the Maoris as Te Maru – which translates as ‘Place of Shelter’ – you’re guaranteed a warm and refreshing welcome here. The location means Timaru has understandably been adopted as something of a pitstop for road trips by many but with charming Edwardian architecture a lively port and prime fishing opportunities – there is a lot to keep you hooked. Beachside charm awaits at Caroline Bay while birds tweet and chatter in the botanical gardens where pink and purple petalled flowers unfold. The diverse museum exhibits everything from aviation history to hunting wares and whaling tusks – and the town boasts the third biggest art gallery in all of New Zealand – which is adorned with colour and creativity. Paths weave along the stunning coastline with waves washing below and seabirds soaring on the breeze. Caroline Bay’s beaches are also home to a colony of blue penguins who return to the shelter of their sandy burrows as the sun dips. If you choose to venture inland you can witness the rise of mighty Mount Cook and the glorious glaciers that spill down from its icy heights. Head to the glowing turquoise Lake Pukaki for some of the best of New Zealand’s cinematic fantasy landscapes and to immerse yourself in the mystical settings where scenes from The Hobbit films were shot. Hike the lake – surrounded by the majesty of the Southern Alps – or cycle pathways alongside scenic salmon-filled waterways.

Day 11: Lyttelton

Your initial impression of Christchurch will likely be one of a genteel, green city. Joggers loop through shady Hagley Park, and punters ply the narrow Avon River, which bubbles between banks lined with willows and oaks. With a population approaching 350,000, Christchurch is the largest South Island city, and the second-largest in the country. It is also the forward supply depot for the main U.S. Antarctic base at McMurdo Sound. The face of Christchurch is changing rapidly, fueled by both internal and international immigration. The Māori community, although still below the national average in size, is growing. Ngai Tahu, the main South Island Māori tribe, settled Treaty of Waitangi claims in 1997 and have been investing in tourism ventures. Old wooden bungalows are making way for town houses, the arts scene is flourishing, and the city’s university attracts cutting-edge technology companies. In short, there’s plenty of fresh energy percolating underneath the English veneer.

Day itinerary:

New Zealand’s ‘Garden City’ is a place of quiet streets leafy parks and beautiful tree-lined boulevards. Christchurch has an unmistakable English flavour to it and serves as the gateway to southern New Zealand’s natural wonders. The rebuild of the country’s oldest city continues apace – following the earthquakes that devastated it in 2011 – and the South Island’s biggest city is now blossoming having evolved into a confident and cultural powerhouse. Colourful street art adds an edge to the city while shiny new bars and restaurants contribute to the sense of revitalisation and renewal. Visit museums and take tours to learn more of the reconstruction which has made incredible progress in recent years. The old-time charm of a punt on the River Avon is still a quintessential Christchurch experience. Sail amid weeping willows drooping to the water as you drift through a blur of colours in the botanical gardens. Surrounded by extinct volcanoes soaring lakes and the rolling farmlands of the Canterbury Plains spectacular scenery sprawls around the city. Pay a visit to the Southern Alps’ snow-covered peaks the stunning hot pools and rushing streams of Hanmer Springs or the Hector’s dolphins who swim at Akaroa. A city that has faced immense challenges – both natural and manmade – over the last decade it’s hard not to feel inspired by Christchurch’s defiant character and friendly people who share an open and welcoming outlook that shines stronger than ever.

Day 12: Wellington

New Zealand’s capital is, arguably, the country’s most cosmopolitan metropolis. It’s world-class Te Papa Tongarewa-Museum of New Zealand is a don’t-miss attraction, and the burgeoning film industry led, of course, by the Lord of the Rings extravaganzas has injected new life into the local arts scene. Attractive and compact enough to be explored easily on foot, Wellington is a booming destination. Modern high-rise buildings gaze over Port Nicholson, surely one of the finest natural anchorages in the world. Known to local Māori as The Great Harbor of Tara, its two massive arms form the jaws of the fish of Maui from Māori legend. Sometimes referred to as the windy city, Wellington has been the seat of New Zealand’s government since 1865.

Day itinerary:

Sprawling around a hook-shaped peninsula Wellington is a vibrant and energetic seaside capital. A compact well-stocked city of buzzing bars and chatting cafes New Zealand’s capital is a bright and breezy place with an infectious easy-going atmosphere. Known as the creative hub of the South Pacific there are shows to see art installations to enjoy and rich flavours to savour here. The sounds of rare and beautiful birdlife fill the hills around the city and the bush of the green belt provides easy-to-access sanctuary strolls and cycle rides. The Botanical Gardens break up the buildings even more while an iconic cherry-red cable car rumbles up Wellington’s slope to the city’s best viewpoint looking out over the city’s scenic harbour from above. Zealandia has provided an urban home for rare and endangered birdlife bringing many species back from the brink. Varied museums cover everything from Maori traditions to earthquake simulations and even the real-life Kraken – a displayed colossal squid. Wellington is only New Zealand’s third-biggest city but spend some time here and you’ll realise that’s a blessing. The wines grown nearby are revered and the city’s craft beers are also making waves. Wander the breezy waterfront and admire the surfers riding the wind-whipped rollers of the self-proclaimed ‘coolest little capital in the world’.

Day 13: Napier

The earthquake that struck Napier at 10:46 am on February 3, 1931, was—at 7.8 on the Richter scale—the largest quake ever recorded in New Zealand. The coastline was wrenched upward several feet. Almost all the town’s brick buildings collapsed; many people were killed on the footpaths as they rushed outside. The quake triggered fires throughout town, and with water mains shattered, little could be done to stop the blazes that devoured the remaining wooden structures. Only a few buildings survived (the Public Service Building with its neoclassical pillars is one), and the death toll was well over 100.The surviving townspeople set up tents and cookhouses in Nelson Park, and then tackled the city’s reconstruction at a remarkable pace. In the rush to rebuild, Napier went mad for art deco, the bold, geometric style that had burst on the global design scene in 1925. Now a walk through the art deco district, concentrated between Emerson, Herschell, Dalton, and Browning streets, is a stylistic immersion. The decorative elements are often above the ground floors, so keep your eyes up.

Day itinerary:

Sip the fine wines of legendary producers visit Cape Kidnappers’ crowds of birdlife and wander the stylish streets of the world’s art deco capital during your time in handsome Napier. Located on the huge arc of Hawke’s Bay Napier enjoys a generous Mediterranean style climate and a breezy cafe culture. A green outdoor town wander Marine Parade which borders the rich blue Pacific and invites you to stroll along a tree-lined two-mile seafront. Take the gentle hike up to Bluff Hill for panoramic views over the lively Napier Port and out towards Cape Kidnappers – given its name following a clash between Captain Cook’s settlers and the local Maori population. Here you’ll encounter one of the world’s largest mainland gannet colonies creating a colourful cacophony by the sea. Set on sheer cliffs the golden-headed birds are an incredible sight swirling overhead and dancing before you. The city’s renowned Art Deco architecture glows in the sunshine of New Zealand’s North Island. Built following the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake which ripped through the region in 1931. The rebuild in the architectural fashion of the time has left an authentic treasure-trove of 30s style buildings. Grapes thrive in the warm dry climate of Napier and Hawke’s Bay which is one of New Zealand’s oldest wine regions. Swirl glasses in waterfront bars or head out to walk among the vineyards of pinot gris and syrah grapes learning of the climate conditions that help add sophisticated flavour to every bottle.

Day 14: Gisborne

With a population of around 35,000 and located on the north island, Gisborne exudes history at every turn. Maori for “Great standing place of Kiwa”, Kiwa was a leading figure aboard the Maori ancestral canoe, Takitimu, which ran aground in Gisborne around 1450 AD. After landing, Kiwa became a coastal guardian, eventually marrying Parawhenuamea, the keeper of the streams. The union point of three rivers and the first place to see the sun, the city is filled with light and laugher and gracefully squeezes surfer’s beaches with the district’s colonial past. Captain Cook made his first landfall here, John Harris set up his first trading station in the then village and today, Gisborn is the major centre of Maori cultural life.Suffice to say then that the city is a watery wonderland. With its picture perfect beaches, what savvy traveller does not want to add being among the first people in the world to say they have watched the sky change colour as the sun bursts from out of the sea.   A place of nature, spectacular beach cliff views are all just part and parcel of everyday life here, and easy walks from the centre of town to the Titirangi Reserve will award you with yet more unbelievable 180˚ vistas from Poverty Bay to Gisborne City; stretch your eyes with the panorama, while stretching your legs on one of the many enjoyable walks.A perfect place to stroll, amble and wander, like much of New Zealand Gisborne keeps a healthy respect for history and nature and enjoys a very laid back feel.

Day 15: Tauranga

The population center of the Bay of Plenty, Tauranga is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing cities. Along with its neighbor, Whakatane, this seaside city claims to be one of the country’s sunniest towns. Unlike most local towns, Tauranga doesn’t grind to a halt in the off-season, because it has one of the busiest ports in the country, and the excellent waves at the neighboring beach resort of Mount Maunganui—just across Tauranga’s harbor bridge—always draw surfers and holiday folk.

Day itinerary:

Tauranga is New Zealand’s sunny capital – with wide sweeping beaches and surfers curling across cresting waves. Climb to the top for spectacular views of the natural harbour or take winding coastal footpaths to explore the unfolding scenery. An entry point to the vast indent of the Bay of Plenty the volcanic peak of Mount Maunganui is a fittingly dramatic welcome. Brooding geothermal energy creates spectacular natural attractions across this region while plunging waterfalls and fascinating Maori culture ensures that the Bay of Plenty has a lot to offer visitors. Said to receive New Zealand’s highest amount of sunshine the hanging kiwi citrus fruit and avocados add an exotic touch to the area’s landscape – especially around Te Puke. Vibrant teal and orange colours await at the stunning geothermal area of Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve where mud pools bubble and steam rises from the earth. There are more hot pools and some of the country’s best scenery at Lake Rotoiti – where you can kayak across the smooth surface and enter a cave that glows gentle blue with its darkened roof illuminated by glittering glow worms. Enter New Zealand’s fantasy world with a visit to some of the country’s celebrated filming spots – which have featured as doubles for JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth’s fantasy settings. Offshore the wonderful White Island’s volcanic cone peeks from the waves and New Zealand’s most active volcano certainly knows how to put on a show belching out smoke across the water.

Day 16: Auckland

Day itinerary:

Known as the ‘City of Sails’, its two harbours will tempt you with waterfront walks and the chance to breathe fresh sea air deep into your lungs while absorbing spectacular views of Auckland’s grand harbour bridge’s span. Take in the true scale of Auckland’s magnificent cityscape by ascending 192 metres to the Sky Tower and looking out over the city’s gleaming silver towers which reflect on the abundant waters below. Views over the bay and adjacent islands await and you can share elegant cocktails at this dizzying height above the mingling yachts of Viaduct Harbour. Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of the area at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Set beside tranquil fountains and handsomely landscaped flowerbeds of Albert Park, the French-Renaissance building houses, New Zealand’s most extensive art collection and exhibits works from Māori and Pacific artists. New Zealand is world-renowned for its captivating natural scenery and day trips across the sparkling bays to nearby islands like Waiheke Tiritiri Matangi and Rangitoto are always tempting. Discover lava caves grape-laden vineyards and flourishing wildlife in the Hauraki Gulf’s islands. You’ll also find an exceptional 360-degree panorama over the city to the horizon beyond from the heights of ancient Mount Eden. The spectacular dormant volcano rises improbably from a city suburb and also lends its name to Eden Park – the unusual translucent stadium of New Zealand’s mighty All Blacks.

Minors & Childcare

Minors & Childcare

Silversea cruise guidelines state that children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult aged 21 or over, in the same or a connecting suite, for the duration of the voyage. Each suite that includes a minor must have at least one adult aged 21 or over present. If the adult accompanying the minor is not their parent, a Parental Consent Guardianship Form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian and received by Silversea prior to sailing. Please contact our Special Services Department at SpecialServices@Silversea.com for a Parental Consent Form.

Guests must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol. Silversea reserves the right to refuse service to anyone who, in its sole judgment, may be under the influence of alcohol or in any circumstance necessary to preserve the health and safety of guests and crew.

Silversea cannot accommodate infants less than six months of age and reserves the right to limit the number of children less than three years of age. Parents are required to sign a notarized waiver prior to sailing to grant a valid booking for children ages between 6 months and 1 year old. A signed and notarized waiver will be required for all children of these ages.

Although Silversea accepts guests over the age of 6 months (over the age of 5 years for Silversea Expeditions), there are no special programs for children on board our ships, and Silversea does not provide childcare, entertainment, or supervision. Silversea reserves the right to limit the number of children less than 3 years of age.

Children under the age of 8 years are permitted to participate in suitable Shore Excursions or shuttle services only if the vehicles are equipped with the correct safety harness and seating equipment. Child harnesses and secure seating cannot be guaranteed. Silversea reserves the right to refuse children under 8 years old on any tour on the basis of safety. Guests may use their own approved safety seat, booster seat, or harness, provided it is compatible with the local touring vehicle and can properly secure the child.

To ensure guest safety and comfort, the following minimum ages apply to expedition activities:

  • Zodiac Cruises: Minimum age 5 years, accompanied by an adult.
  • Snorkeling: Minimum age 12 years, accompanied by an adult.
  • Kayaking: Minimum age 14 years when accompanied by an adult, or 16 years to participate solo.

As Silversea does not provide childcare services, an adult family member must remain onboard with any child who does not meet the minimum age requirements.

Inoculations

Generally, inoculations are not required in most areas where Silversea travels. These requirements are subject to change and it is recommended that you verify current guidelines with your travel professional prior to departure. Please note that when travelling to countries that do require inoculations, written verification will be necessary. Before taking any trip overseas, it is wise to check with your doctor, particularly if you are under a doctor’s care.

Medical Services On Board

Each Silversea ship is equipped with a Medical Centre, which is customarily staffed by a doctor and nurse on 24-hour call when at sea. When docked, supplementary emergency care may also be obtained through local medical facilities. Guests may be charged for medical services and for medications used for their medical treatment. The Medical Centre is not intended or designed to provide ongoing treatment of pre-existing conditions or for extended critical care, and Silversea is not responsible for the diagnosis, treatment or services furnished by shipboard medical personnel. Guests requiring oxygen for medical reasons are welcome to bring an oxygen concentrator onboard. Guests wishing to bring their own portable oxygen tanks must obtain prior written authorisation from Silversea, as restrictions may apply.

Pregnancy

Silversea policy regarding pregnancy is derived from the Cruise Lines International Association endorsement of the American College of Emergency Physicians Health Care Guidelines for Cruise Ship Medical Facilities, which can be found at https://www.acep.org/. This includes the guideline that “Pregnant women who have entered the 24th week of estimated fetal gestational age at any time during the cruise should not be eligible to sail with the ship. It is Silversea policy that any Guest who will have entered her 24th week of pregnancy or greater, at any time during the cruise, will be prohibited from sailing. The Guest and treating physician should consider before any cruise that there is no Obstetrician/Gynecologist available on the ship, and that pregnancies, when unstable and poorly controlled, are potentially life-threatening, especially without back up. A Guest may be at sea for several days without any immediate hospital and/or specialist back up, and that since the proposed itinerary is not within the U.S., and the availability of specialized shore side facilities can be problematic. All guests are required to sign a health questionnaire at check-in to ensure they are aware of our pregnancy policy. If you have already booked a cruise or cruise tour and do not meet this requirement, please contact your travel agent or airline.

Prescription Medication

For your convenience and wellbeing, it is important that you bring a sufficient supply of any prescription medicine you may need. Prescriptions cannot be refilled onboard, and usually cannot be refilled overseas. To prevent delays in clearing Customs, it is also a good idea to travel with a doctor’s letter explaining that your prescription medication is required for your continued health. It is also recommended that the medicine remain in its original container with the original pharmacy label intact.

Special Medical Conditions

If you have any existing medical condition that may require attention, or should you require oxygen for medical reasons whilst onboard, please send written notification prior to your voyage to specialservices@silversea.com or via fax to 954-759-5049. Please note that an oxygen concentrator is the only form of oxygen equipment that the Silversea ships can accommodate. Guests who rely upon wheelchairs must bring their own. Please note that not all shore excursions are suitable for guests with impaired mobility.

Health & Medical Requirements

All guests are required to report in writing to Silversea at the time their reservation is made:

  • Any physical or mental condition that may require medical or professional treatment or attention during the voyage.
  • Any condition that may render the guest unfit for travel, or that may require special care or assistance.
  • Any condition that may pose a risk or danger to the guest or anyone else onboard the ship.
  • Any condition that may require oxygen for medical reasons.
  • Any intention or need to use a wheelchair cart, other mobility device or a service or assistance animal aboard ship.

By booking passage and by boarding the ship, the guest represents and warrants that he / she is physically and otherwise fit to travel, and that the guest will comply at all times with applicable rules and regulations of the ship and orders and instructions of the ship’s officers and medical staff. Silversea reserves the right without liability to require a guest to disembark and / or to refuse to board and transport a guest who, in the judgment of Silversea or the ship’s Master, is unfit to travel or may require care beyond that which Silversea is reasonably able to provide. Silversea strongly recommends wheelchair guests travel with someone who is able to assist them both ashore and at sea as Silversea may be unable to offer special assistance. Please note that wheel-on and / or wheel-off access may not be available at some ports-of-call. Wheelchair guests must bring their own collapsible wheelchair.

For guests travelling aboard Expedition Fleet vessels, Silversea strongly recommends wheelchair guests travel with someone who is able

to assist them both ashore and at sea as Silversea may be unable to offer special assistance. Please note that wheel-on and / or wheel-off access may not be available at some ports-of-call. Wheelchair guests must bring their own collapsible wheelchair.

Baggage Allowance

Baggage Allowance

A reasonable amount of cruise luggage may be brought aboard the ship without charge. For Silversea guests or guests on land programmes, luggage must be handled in accordance with regulations and tariffs of airlines and/or ground operators.

Luggage allowance policies may vary by airline, destination and class of service. Most, if not all, airlines strictly enforce their carry-on and checked luggage policies and you may be required to pay additional fees should the weight and size of your luggage be outside the airline’s set policy and/or the number of pieces exceed the free luggage allowance. Since the airlines’ policies change frequently, it is strongly recommended that you or your travel professional obtain current baggage allowance restrictions via the airline’s website or by contacting the air carriers directly.

Please note that guests are, at all times, fully responsible for any/all airline baggage fees. For travel to/from and within the United States, please visit https://bags.amadeus.com/ or the individual air carriers’ website for a complete listing of baggage fees.

Silver Shore Land Adventures may impose additional baggage limitations. Your final travel documents include the details of your Land Adventure’s baggage limitations, if applicable. All luggage must be securely packed and tagged with the supplied pre-printed cruise luggage tags supplied as part of your documentation package. In accordance with airport security restrictions for carry-on baggage, it is recommended that you hand carry travel documents (passports, visas, inoculation verification, cruise and air tickets), medications and valuables. Liquid, fragile, perishable and other articles not suitably packed are transported at your own risk. Under no circumstances may dangerous items (including but not limited to: explosives, firearms, combustible or illegal substances) be taken aboard the ship.

Items prohibited on board include:

  • Firearms and ammunition, including realistic replicas
  • Sharp objects, including all knives and scissors (Please note that personal grooming items, such as safety razors and scissors with a blade length less than 4 inches / 10 cm, are allowed)
  • Illegal drugs and substances
  • CBD Oil / CBD products
  • Candles, incense, coffee makers, clothes irons, travel steamers and hot plates (i.e. items that generate heat or produce an open flame, or any other item that may create a fire hazard). Exceptions include curling irons, hair straighteners, matches and normal lighter. However, “torch lighters” that emit a powerful concentrated flame, and novelty lighters that look like guns, are not allowed
  • Hoverboards
  • Martial arts, self defense, and sports gear, including handcuffs, pepper spray, and night sticks
  • Flammable liquids and explosives, including lighter fluid and fireworks
  • Hookahs and water hookah pipes
  • HAM radios
  • Electrical extension cords, including power strips and/or surge protected strips
  • Dangerous chemicals, including bleach and paint
  • Perishable food and meat products
  • Drones, including toy flying device

There are limits to where smart glasses can be worn onboard. Smart glasses cannot be worn in the casino, spa service areas, restrooms, locker rooms, medical facilities, security screening locations, during back-of-house tours, in crew areas, or anywhere there is a reasonable expectation for guest and crew privacy.

Smart glasses users who are seen violating this policy will have the glasses confiscated by the Chief Security Officer or Staff Captain.

If such items are found, they may be confiscated and returned on the last day of the voyage prior to disembarkation.

Silversea is not responsible for loss or damage to luggage or any other personal item that may occur, or while participating in hotel and/or land programmes or shore excursions. To avoid the possibility of losing cruise luggage en route to the port of embarkation, it is recommended to ship your cruise luggage ahead of you via Silversea’s Silver Shore Baggage Valet programme or other service.

Upon embarkation, Silversea will make every effort to deliver your cruise luggage in a timely manner; however delivery may be delayed due to strict customs formalities that are beyond the ship’s control, so please remember to pack all essentials in your carry-on bag.

Internet

All Silversea ships are equipped to offer wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet access. You can use your own laptop to surf the Internet and check emails at Wi-Fi locations throughout the ship, or from the comfort and privacy of your suite. Computers, email and Internet access are also available on board at the Internet Café. However, it is important to understand that telecommunication services while at sea are via satellite and significantly different than high-speed connections on land back home. The signal travels in a similar manner to radio waves but at much greater distances. Therefore, onboard Internet access is not guaranteed at all times. Satellite communications are also affected by weather and the ship’s location. In particular, Internet service is extremely sporadic while in the Arctic. Guests aboard expedition cruises to/from Svalbard should be prepared to be out of communication for the duration of their time on board.

Wheelchair Accessibility & Mobility Assistance

Wheelchair Accessibility & Mobility Assistance

BEFORE BOOKING

Do guests need to notify Silversea in advance about mobility needs?

Yes, guests should inform Silversea of any special assistance or mobility equipment requirements before sailing. This can be done via My Silversea under Guest Information / Special Request, or by contacting specialservices@silversea.com.

Does Silversea provide wheelchairs?

Yes, each vessel has wheelchairs available at the reception for temporary use, such as embarkation and disembarkation. Guests who require a wheelchair for the entire cruise should bring their own.

Can guests bring their own mobility equipment?

Yes, personal wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility aids are allowed. However, guests staying in standard (non-ADA) suites should note that electric scooters may not fit through the doors.

Therefore, guests traveling with a wheelchair, scooter, or ECV are always highly suggested to book a wheelchair-accessible suite with a wider entrance door and an appropriate path of travel inside the room and accommodate the equipment. Regular Suites have a narrower entrance door and may not have the necessary interior space to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters.

What features do wheelchair-accessible suites offer?

Silversea ships offer specially designed suites for guests who require mobility assistance. These suites are equipped with wider entrance doors and appropriate paths of travel to accommodate wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility equipment. All areas within these suites are reachable without the need for additional ramps, except for Silver Suites onboard Silver Moon and Silver Dawn and Classic Veranda onboard Silver Endeavour. In these suites Silversea offer ramp to go outside the balcony. The vessels also have wheelchairs available at the reception for guest use.

EMBARKATION & DISEMBARKATION

How do guests get on and off the ship with mobility equipment?

Silversea vessels have procedures in place to assist guests with mobility equipment during embarkation and disembarkation. When the gangway is flat, guests can drive their wheelchair off the ship. However, if the gangway involves stairs, our staff will provide assistance. The Safety Officer or Bridge must be informed whenever a wheelchair is involved in disembarkation or boarding, and our crew members are available to assist guests in need.

Is assistance available for boarding?

Yes, but guests who require full-time assistance should travel with a companion, as Silversea does not provide dedicated personal caregivers. Butlers can assist with getting to the gangway or dining venues but do not provide continuous mobility assistance.

ONBOARD

Silversea’s ships are designed for accessibility, featuring:

  • Wide gangways to accommodate most wheelchairs and scooters
  • Accessible public restrooms
  • Wheelchair seating in dining venues, bars, and the Venetian Lounge
  • Braille/tactile signage for visually impaired guests in elevators, stateroom numbers, and staircases

How does Silversea assist disabled guests in their suites?

Silversea butler can provide reasonable assistance to guest getting to and from the gangway, and to and from a restaurant, however Silversea does not offer full-time wheelchair service and/or staff fully dedicated to providing Guests with wheelchair assistance. Guests traveling on their own wheelchair should be assisted only when requested and are recommended to travel with an able bodily companion.

GOING ASHORE

Are all ports wheelchair accessible?

Not all ports have wheelchair-friendly infrastructure. In some destinations, tender boats or on Silversea Expeditions Zodiacs are required for disembarkation, and wheelchairs or mobility scooters cannot be accommodated in these cases.

Can guests arrange private accessible transportation in port?

If available, private wheelchair-accessible vehicles can be arranged. In some ports, shuttle buses may be wheelchair accessible, but availability is not guaranteed.

Does Silversea offer wheelchair-accessible shore excursions?

Until now we have been offering dedicated “Wheelchair Accessible Excursions” in some areas of the world., These tours are operated by wheelchair accessible vehicles and include only wheelchair accessible venues. These tours are mainly offered in Europe and the US. If you have any questions or concerns regarding shore excursion suitability, please contact the Shore Concierge (shoreconcierge@silversea.com) before your voyage or visit the Shore Concierge desk for more detailed information once onboard.

Wheelchair accessible shore excursions are indicated on the website with the universal accessibility icon.

Are there alternatives for guests with limited mobility?

In almost every port, Silversea offers low-activity excursions specially designed for mobility challenged guests, who can negotiate the steps on and off the coaches.

Is there any destination that is not recommend to guests with disabilities?

The more exotic destinations, like Asia, South Africa and South America it is recommended to guest to book a private vehicle due to the lack of infrastructure, for example wheelchair accessible vehicles are very rare to find and museums, restaurants and popular attractions are not often completely accessible.

Does Silversea offer wheelchair-accessible transportation between the ship and visiting site?

If available in the port yes, however this is not often available.

How Silversea assist disabled guests during excursions?

If wheelchair accessible excursions are not available, it is recommended to guests to book a private vehicle where they can have a dedicated guide and driver who can give them full attention. On regular shore excursions, the guide must look after all guests and may not be able to fully assist disabled guests.

Tendering

Many ports of call require guests on the vessels to go to shore by tender craft. If you choose to participate in an excursion which includes tendering, you must be able to negotiate narrow stairs to enter and exit the tenders with limited assistance. When the vessel is required to tender guests, the vessel will not be moored, and a gangway will not be available. During tendering, Silversea is unable to transport wheelchairs or mobility scooters with guests.

    Day 7: Milford Sound
    Day 7: Cruising Doubtful Sound
    Day 8: Oban, Stewart Island
    Day 9: Port Chalmers
    Day 10: Timaru
    Day 11: Lyttelton

    Day 13: Napier
    Day 14: Gisborne
    Day 15: Tauranga
    Day 16: Auckland

    Internet
