Day 1: Civitavecchia

Italy’s vibrant capital lives in the present, but no other city on earth evokes its past so powerfully. For over 2,500 years, emperors, popes, artists, and common citizens have left their mark here. Archaeological remains from ancient Rome, art-stuffed churches, and the treasures of Vatican City vie for your attention, but Rome is also a wonderful place to practice the Italian-perfected il dolce far niente, the sweet art of idleness. Your most memorable experiences may include sitting at a caffè in the Campo de’ Fiori or strolling in a beguiling piazza.

Day programme:

Welcome to the Eternal City, where ancient monuments and elaborate churches sit alongside busy cafes and designer boutiques. Your ultra-luxury Discovery Yacht will be waiting at Civitavecchia, a Roman port dating back to the second century.  When you arrive, be warmly welcomed on board by the Captain and crew. Settle in your 6-star suite and ask the butler to help you choose from the pillow menu. Head to the Sky Bar on Deck 10 and toast the beginning of an unforgettable voyage as you watch the city’s twinkling lights. Scenic transfers are only available for flights arriving into Rome prior to 02:00 PM.Docked: 18:00

Day 2: Sorrento

Sorrento may have become a jumping-off point for visitors to Pompeii, Capri, and Amalfi, but you can find countless reasons to love it for itself. The Sorrentine people are fair-minded and hardworking, bubbling with life and warmth. The tuff cliff on which the town rests is spread over the bay, absorbing sunlight, while orange and lemon trees waft their perfume in spring. Winding along a cliff above a small beach and two harbors, the town is split in two by a narrow ravine formed by a former mountain stream. To the east, dozens of hotels line busy Via Correale along the cliff—many have “grand” included in their names, and some indeed still are. To the west, however, is the historic sector, which still enchants. It’s a relatively flat area, with winding, stone-paved lanes bordered by balconied buildings, some joined by medieval stone arches. The central piazza is named after the poet Torquato Tasso, born here in 1544. This part of town is a delightful place to walk through. Craftspeople are often at work in their stalls and shops and are happy to let you watch; in fact, that’s the point. Music spots and bars cluster in the side streets near Piazza Tasso.

Day programme:

Your first stop is Sorrento, a gorgeous resort town overlooking the Bay of Naples. Known as the land of lemons and orange groves, Sorrento’s natural assets have been put to good use; it’s the birthplace of limoncello liqueur. Sorrento is also the gateway to the spectacular Amalfi Coast, which stretches away along the rocky shoreline of the deep blue Mediterranean. Spend your day wandering Sorrento’s peaceful alleyways and discover its historic pastel buildings, grand villas, luxury hotels and picturesque cafes. In the early morning, Scenic Eclipse will set sail towards Capri. Enjoy spectacular views from the open deck as the island’s iconic cliffs and shimmering waters come into view, setting the stage for a magical day. Scenic Freechoice: Guided Tour of Pompeii: Step back in time with a guided exploration of Pompeii, remarkably preserved beneath volcanic ash after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. Discover ancient streets, villas, frescoes and mosaics while learning about Roman life. Conclude with a refreshing drink and a slice of authentic Neapolitan pizza before returning to Sorrento. Hike on the Path of Gods & Positano: Travel to Agerola for a scenic hike high above the Amalfi Coast, enjoying breathtaking views of coastal villages and Mount Pertuso. Continue to picturesque Positano, where pastel-coloured houses, boutiques and seaside cafés await. Enjoy free time to explore before returning to Sorrento.  Walking tour of Sorrento: Explore Sorrento on foot, discovering the Valley of the Mills, Sant’Antonino Church, San Francesco Cloister, historic fishing harbor and charming old town. Admire Sorrento Bay’s views while learning about local history and heritage. Conclude your stroll with a refreshing taste of authentic Italian gelato or lemon granita. Taste of Sorrento: Visit a local farm near Sorrento and discover the traditional art of mozzarella making. Stroll through lemon and olive groves while sampling freshly baked bread, cheeses and salami. Meet your gracious host, learn about authentic Italian food production and enjoy a peaceful taste of the countryside. Anchored: 8:00 – 23:00

Day 3: Capri

Tour description Capri, Italy Popular since Roman times when the emperors built their villas on Capri, this island is surely one of the world’s most famous and beautiful spots. Visiting Capri, it is easy to see why the ancient Romans fell in love with this place 2,000 years ago – the craggy mountains, the sea caves and grottos and the brilliantly colored flowers cast a magic spell then and still capture the admiration of today’s travelers. There are sleek yachts moored in the deep blue waters of the bays, and beautiful villas and tiny villages cling to steep slopes. An excellent year-round climate and a breathtaking landscape complete the picture of a storybook island. There are two main villages – Capri Town, site of the popular meeting point “Piazzetta,” and Anacapri, the upper town, dominated by 1,750-foot-high Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island. Both remain the “in” scene for international travelers. By spending millions on comfort and style, the island has ensured its continuing success. After a trip to upper-level Anacapri, visitors enjoy strolling the narrow, cobbled streets of Capri Town, browsing in chic boutiques and spending time in the Piazzetta with a drink in one of the outdoor cafés. There is a funicular from the main port of Marina Grande to Capri Town; from Anacapri, a chair lift whisks visitors to the top of Monte Solaro for a spellbinding view. The magical Blue Grotto can be reached by boat from Marina Grande, but entrance into the grotto depends for the most part on sea conditions. Please Note: For your convenience, the shore excursions offered for this port of call are available to reserve in advance at www.silversea.com until August 8 , as well as offered for purchase on board, unless otherwise noted in the description. Going Ashore in Capri Pier Information The ship is scheduled to anchor off Capri’s main port, Marina Grande. Guests will be taken ashore via local tenders, arriving at the pier just a short distance from the funicular to Capri Town. Taxis and minibuses are also available near the pier area. Be sure to agree on the fare before starting out. Shopping Capri is a shopping mecca, though by no means inexpensive. Upscale shops and boutiques offer an array of jewelry, designer fashions, resort wear, straw articles and souvenir items. Start from the Piazzetta and the streets fanning out from the square. Some shops may be closed between 12:30/1:00 p.m. and 4:00/4:30 p.m. The local currency is the euro. Cuisine Capri features plenty of open-air eateries in addition to top rated restaurants. Fresh seafood and delicious pasta dishes make for a nice lunch; for a quick meal there are tempting sandwiches and pizza. You might enjoy a hearty Italian table wine with lunch. Other Sights Capri Town La Piazzetta is the main square of Capri Town located just opposite the upper funicular station. The square is an ideal place from where to start exploring or shopping. Sidewalk cafés around the square provide residents and visitors with a popular pastime – people-watching while sipping a drink or enjoying a coffee.   Anacapri Reaching Capri’s second town is via local minibus. In addition to numerous souvenir shops and designer boutiques, attractions include Axel Munthe’s Villa San Michele and the chair lift to Monte Solaro. Blue Grotto Boat excursions to the Blue Grotto can be booked locally at Marina Grande. Be aware that it is necessary to transfer into smaller boats in front of the grotto. Also, entrance to the grotto is subject to weather and sea conditions. For this reason, tours to the Blue Grotto are frequently cancelled. Private arrangements are not available in this port.

Day programme:

Capri’s mythical charm has captured hearts for more than 2,000 years. Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus fell in love with the island in 29BC, building villas, temples and gardens for his own private paradise. Today, its jaw-dropping beauty still draws royalty, celebrities and fashionable travelers from across the world. Wander through the Piazzetta and listen to the melodious chiming of the clock tower, admire the impossibly blue ocean as it crashes onto the cliffs, and taste its famous flourless chocolate cake or a fresh caprese salad. Scenic Freechoice: Walking Tour of Capri & Augustus Gardens: Experience the elegance of Capri with a scenic ride to Marina Grande, followed by a funicular ascent to the village centre. Visit the beautiful Caesar Augustus Gardens, take in iconic views, and enjoy free time to explore boutiques and cafés before returning to the pier. Island of Capri by Land & Sea: Cruise Capri’s east coast, visit Monte Solaro via chairlift for panoramic views, then enjoy free time in Anacapri and Capri village before descending to the port via funicular. Capri Natural Arch & Capri Town Walking Tour: Arrive in Capri town and walk to the Natural Arch through the main centre, enjoying stunning island and sea views. Then return via Via Camerelle to visit Augustus Gardens, followed by a refreshment break. Limoncello Experience: Tender ashore to Capri, then travel to a private villa in Anacapri. Craft limoncello from hand-picked garden lemons, enjoy a tasting, and receive a bottle as a gift to take home, concluding with a scenic return drive. Anchored: 8:00 – 19:30

Day 4: Taormina

The medieval cliff-hanging town of Taormina is overrun with tourists, yet its natural beauty is still hard to dispute. The view of the sea and Mt. Etna from its jagged cactus-covered cliffs is as close to perfection as a panorama can get—especially on clear days, when the snowcapped volcano’s white puffs of smoke rise against the blue sky. Writers have extolled Taormina’s beauty almost since it was founded in the 6th century BC by Greeks from nearby Naxos; Goethe and D. H. Lawrence were among its well-known enthusiasts. The town’s boutique-lined main streets get old pretty quickly, but the many hiking paths that wind through the beautiful hills surrounding Taormina promise a timeless alternative. A trip up to stunning Castelmola (whether on foot or by car) should also be on your itinerary.

Day programme:

This morning, you’ll sail through the Strait of Messina, which separates the Italian mainland from Sicily. The passage offers stunning views of rugged coastlines and distant mountains on the way to Giardini Naxos. This popular and picturesque seaside resort stands on the site of Sicily’s earliest Greek colony, offering a glimpse into the island's ancient past. Known as the Jewel of Sicily, Taormina was once a stop on the famed Grand Tour of the 19th century. Today it’s packed with luxury hotels, exceptional restaurants and designer boutiques. It’s also the gateway to Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe.  Scenic Freechoice: Walking Tour of Taormina: Enjoy a scenic drive to Taormina to explore the Greek Theatre and Cathedral, then free time to shop or stroll the medieval streets. Etna & Wine Experience: Traverse winding mountain roads to explore Europe's largest active volcano, Mt. Etna, Crater Silvestri, before visiting a local winery. Hike to Madonna della Rocca: Travel to Taormina, then hike to Madonna della Rocca sanctuary at 400m altitude, for stunning views of the sea, mountains and Mount Etna. Enjoy a refreshment before returning to the pier. Anchored: 12:00 – 19:00

Day 5: Valletta

Malta’s capital, the minicity of Valletta, has ornate palaces and museums protected by massive fortifications of honey-color limestone. Houses along the narrow streets have overhanging wooden balconies for people-watching from indoors. Generations ago they gave housebound women a window on the world of the street. The main entrance to town is through the City Gate (where all bus routes end), which leads onto Triq Repubblika (Republic Street), the spine of the grid-pattern city and the main shopping street. Triq Mercante (Merchant Street) parallels Repubblika to the east and is also good for strolling. From these two streets, cross streets descend toward the water; some are stepped. Valletta’s compactness makes it ideal to explore on foot. City Gate and the upper part of Valletta are experiencing vast redevelopment that includes a new Parliament Building and open-air performance venue. The complex, completed mid-2013, has numerous pedestrian detours in place along with building noise and dust. Before setting out along Republic Street, stop at the tourist information office on Merchant Street for maps and brochures.

Day programme:

Day 11: Portimão

Portimão is a major fishing port, and significant investment has been poured into transforming it into an attractive cruise port as well. The city itself is spacious and has several good shopping streets—though sadly many of the more traditional retailers have closed in the wake of the global economic crisis. There is also a lovely riverside area that just begs to be strolled (lots of the coastal cruises depart from here). Don’t leave without stopping for an alfresco lunch at the Doca da Sardinha (“sardine dock”) between the old bridge and the railway bridge. You can sit at one of many inexpensive establishments, eating charcoal-grilled sardines (a local specialty) accompanied by chewy fresh bread, simple salads, and local wine.

Day 12: Lisbon

Set on seven hills on the banks of the River Tagus, Lisbon has been the capital of Portugal since the 13th century. It is a city famous for its majestic architecture, old wooden trams, Moorish features and more than twenty centuries of history. Following disastrous earthquakes in the 18th century, Lisbon was rebuilt by the Marques de Pombal who created an elegant city with wide boulevards and a great riverfront and square, Praça do Comércio. Today there are distinct modern and ancient sections, combining great shopping with culture and sightseeing in the Old Town, built on the city’s terraced hillsides. The distance between the ship and your tour vehicle may vary. This distance is not included in the excursion grades.

Welcome to Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant capital, and a city of rich maritime heritage and stunning architecture. Perched on seven hills overlooking the Tagus River, its cobbled streets lead to grand plazas, historic landmarks and lively neighbourhoods filled with cafés and boutiques. Whether wandering through the atmospheric alleys of Alfama, admiring the intricate tilework of historic buildings or savouring local delicacies, Lisbon captivates with its warm spirit.Docked: 8:00 – 18:00

Day 13: Leixões

Ever since the Romans constructed a fort here and began using it as a trading post, Oporto has been a prosperous commercial centre. In the 15th and 16th centuries the city benefited from the wealth generated by Portugal’s maritime discoveries, and later, the establishment of a lucrative wine trade with Britain compensated for the loss of the spice trade. Today, Portugal’s second-largest city is a thriving, cosmopolitan place and is famous for its production of the fortified, sweet ‘port’ wine. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city was also awarded the status of European Capital of Culture in 2001. A large sandbar prevents ships from sailing into Oporto itself, so for over a century they have used nearby Leixões instead, a man-made seaport constructed nine miles from the city. Leixões is one of Portugal’s major sea ports and is also home to one of the country’s oldest football clubs, winners of the Taça de Portugal cup in 1961.

Day programme:

Spend the morning getting to know your ultra-luxury Discovery Yacht before we arrive in Porto. One of Portugal’s largest seaports, Leixões is just 8 kilometres from the heart of Porto, where the city shares its name with one of the country’s best-known exports, port wine. Located at the mouth of the Douro River, Porto is a World Heritage-listed city of baroque splendour, Gothic cathedrals, and incredible food. Wander through winding alleys lined with houses decorated with Portuguese tiles, see the city’s street art, and take in the views from the cable car and funicular. Scenic Freechoice: Porto City Tour & Gaia Wine Cellars: Explore Porto's historical and cultural charm, including the iconic Cathedral, UNESCO-listed Ribeira district and renowned port wine cellars in Gaia, where you can taste its rich flavours. Porto Active City Tour & Palacio da Bolsa: Discover Porto’s historic streets on an active walking tour, admiring ClerigosTower’s 250-year legacy and Sao Bento Station’s azulejo (Portuguese tile) artistry. Day 14: Ferrol

El Ferrol has been inextricably linked to the sea for more than two millennia, being a major shipbuilding centre for most of its history. From its beginnings as a tiny fishing port in the 1st century BC, it endured conquests by Vandals, Suebis, Arabs and Christians. With the arrival of the Bourbons in the 18th century, Ferrol became a leading maritime centre, largely due to its large natural harbour on the Ferrol Inlet, an arm of the Atlantic. Now a large commercial port, Ferrol is also the gateway to the northern Spanish province of Galicia, a region noted for its green mountains, deep gorges and fast-flowing rivers. It is also well placed for visiting the medieval holy city of Santiago de Compostela. Interestingly, Ferrol’s city centre is modelled on Lisbon in Portugal, a country with which it has strong historical and linguistic ties. The layout comprises of a rectangle lined with six parallel streets, with two squares on each side. These squares have the city’s best shops, restaurants and bars.

Day programme:

Start your day relaxing in your suite. Ask your butler to bring you breakfast in bed or alternatively, choose to savour it in the Yacht Club before arriving in Ferrol. Explore the boutiques and Galician-style houses in Ferrol’s Magdalena neighbourhood, a declared Historic-Artistic site, and visit the 18th century San Felipe Castle, where bulwarks and cannons defended the city.  Scenic Freechoice: Ferrol & Betanzos: Visit the medieval town of Betanzos for a guided walk through historic streets and Gothic churches, followed by free time to explore. End with a panoramic drive through Ferrol's landmarks and coastal scenery. La Coruna & Tapas: Enjoy a scenic drive from El Ferrol to A Coruña, with views of the Atlantic and a photo stop at the ancient Tower of Hercules. Stroll through the old town to Plaza María Pita, then unwind with Galician tapas and wine at a traditional bar. Coastal E-Bike Adventure: Set out on an active e-bike ride through Ferrol’s coastal surroundings, taking in picturesque landscapes and sweeping views along the way. Enjoy a different perspective of the region as you follow a guided route combining natural scenery with local highlights. Docked: 13:00 – 20:00

Enjoy scenic views, colourful streets and a taste of local seafaring culture. Docked: 8:00 – 18:00

Day 16: Bilbao

Time in Bilbao (Bilbo, in Euskera) may be recorded as BG or AG (Before Guggenheim or After Guggenheim). Never has a single monument of art and architecture so radically changed a city. Frank Gehry’s stunning museum, Norman Foster’s sleek subway system, the Santiago Calatrava glass footbridge and airport, the leafy César Pelli Abandoibarra park and commercial complex next to the Guggenheim, and the Philippe Starck AlhóndigaBilbao cultural center have contributed to an unprecedented cultural revolution in what was once the industry capital of the Basque Country.Greater Bilbao contains almost 1 million inhabitants, nearly half the total population of the Basque Country. Founded in 1300 by Vizcayan noble Diego López de Haro, Bilbao became an industrial center in the mid-19th century, largely because of the abundance of minerals in the surrounding hills. An affluent industrial class grew up here, as did the working class in suburbs that line the Margen Izquierda (Left Bank) of the Nervión estuary.Bilbao’s new attractions get more press, but the city’s old treasures still quietly line the banks of the rust-color Nervión River. The Casco Viejo (Old Quarter)—also known as Siete Calles (Seven Streets)—is a charming jumble of shops, bars, and restaurants on the river’s Right Bank, near the Puente del Arenal bridge. This elegant proto-Bilbao nucleus was carefully restored after devastating floods in 1983. Throughout the Casco Viejo are ancient mansions emblazoned with family coats of arms, wooden doors, and fine ironwork balconies. The most interesting square is the 64-arch Plaza Nueva, where an outdoor market is pitched every Sunday morning.Walking the banks of the Nervión is a satisfying jaunt. After all, this was how—while out on a morning jog—Guggenheim director Thomas Krens first discovered the perfect spot for his project, nearly opposite the right bank’s Deusto University. From the Palacio de Euskalduna upstream to the colossal Mercado de la Ribera, parks and green zones line the river. César Pelli’s Abandoibarra project fills in the half mile between the Guggenheim and the Euskalduna bridge with a series of parks, the Deusto University library, the Meliá Bilbao Hotel, and a major shopping center. On the left bank, the wide, late-19th-century boulevards of the Ensanche neighborhood, such as Gran Vía (the main shopping artery) and Alameda de Mazarredo, are the city’s more formal face. Bilbao’s cultural institutions include, along with the Guggenheim, a major museum of fine arts (the Museo de Bellas Artes) and an opera society (Asociación Bilbaína de Amigos de la Ópera, or ABAO) with 7,000 members from Spain and southern France. In addition, epicureans have long ranked Bilbao’s culinary offerings among the best in Spain. Day 18: Bordeaux

Bordeaux as a whole, rather than any particular points within it, is what you’ll want to visit in order to understand why Victor Hugo described it as Versailles plus Antwerp, and why the painter Francisco de Goya, when exiled from his native Spain, chose it as his last home (he died here in 1828). The capital of southwest France and the region’s largest city, Bordeaux remains synonymous with the wine trade: wine shippers have long maintained their headquarters along the banks of the Garonne, while buyers from around the world arrive for the huge biennial Vinexpo show (held in odd-number years).Bordeaux is, admittedly, a less exuberant city than many others in France, but lively and stylish elements are making a dent in its conservative veneer. The cleaned-up riverfront is said by some, after a bottle or two, to exude an elegance reminiscent of St. Petersburg, and that aura of 18th-century élan also permeates the historic downtown sector—“le vieux Bordeaux”—where fine shops invite exploration. To the south of the city center are old docklands undergoing renewal—one train station has now been transformed into a big multiplex movie theater—but the area is still a bit shady. To get a feel for the historic port of Bordeaux, take the 90-minute boat trip that leaves Quai Louis-XVIII every weekday afternoon, or the regular passenger ferry that plies the Garonne between Quai Richelieu and the Pont d’Aquitaine in summer. A nice time to stroll around the city center is the first Sunday of the month, when it’s pedestrian-only and vehicles are banned.

Day programme:

Today, sail inland along the Garonne River, surrounded by lush vineyards while the sun casts a golden glow upon Bordeaux Cathedral. Look out for its gothic spires and the silhouette of the Grand Théâtre, icons of the city. The bustling quayside will be teeming with activity, from charming cafés and markets to street performers. The scent of freshly baked bread and aromatic coffee fills the air. An overnight stay means plenty of time to indulge in Bordeaux’s gourmet delights. Scenic Freechoice: History & Heritage City Tour of UNESCO Classified Bordeaux: Discover Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage city famed for its elegant architecture and rich history. Enjoy a panoramic coach tour through iconic landmarks, followed by a guided stroll and free time to explore the charming Old Town. Bordeaux by Motorbike & Sidecar: Hop into a vintage sidecar for a thrilling ride through Bordeaux’s iconic sights like Place de la Bourse and St. Andrew Cathedral. Panoramic drive of Bordeaux & Wine Culture Museum: Explore Bordeaux’s UNESCO-listed landmarks on a panoramic city tour, then discover the world of wine at La Cité du Vin. Finish with a wine tasting and panoramic city views from the Belvedere. Overview on the Bay of Arachon: Explore Arcachon Bay and climb the Dune du Pilat for stunning coastal views. Visit La Teste-de-Buch for an oyster tasting with Bordeaux white wine before returning to Bordeaux. Docked: 8:00 – Overnight

Day 19: Bordeaux

Bordeaux as a whole, rather than any particular points within it, is what you’ll want to visit in order to understand why Victor Hugo described it as Versailles plus Antwerp, and why the painter Francisco de Goya, when exiled from his native Spain, chose it as his last home (he died here in 1828). A nice time to stroll around the city center is the first Sunday of the month, when it’s pedestrian-only and vehicles are banned.

Day programme:

Enjoy a full day in Bordeaux, soaking in the city’s timeless elegance. Wander picturesque streets lined with majestic buildings, each narrating centuries of stories. Explore vibrant markets with fresh produce and local delicacies. Admire Place de la Bourse and Bordeaux Cathedral's breathtaking architecture. Be immersed in cultural richness at the CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art and the Grand Théâtre.Your visit to Bordeaux is only complete when you sample its world-famous wines at one of the many charming wine bars or prestigious châteaux. Enjoy another overnight to savour Bordeaux's delights until late, taking a leisurely stroll along the Garonne River. Scenic Freechoice: Panoramic Bordeaux & Visit to the Bordeaux Wine Culture Museum: Tour Bordeaux’s iconic sites on a panoramic coach ride, then visit La Cité du Vin for an immersive wine experience and tasting with city views. St Emilion with Wine Estate Visit & Tasting: Start by exploring Saint-Émilion’s historic streets and iconic landmarks with a guided walk. Then, immerse yourself in the winemaking tradition with a cellar tour and tasting of two excellent local wines at a nearby vineyard. The Medoc-Margaux Wine District, with Cheese and Wine Tasting: Journey through Bordeaux’s historic wine district and the prestigious Médoc region, passing elegant vineyards and renowned châteaux. Enjoy a photo stop at Château Margaux before visiting a Classified Wine Estate. Discover traditional winemaking techniques and savour three estate wines paired with local bread and cheese. Docked: Overnight

Day 21: Lorient

Day programme:

Set along the southern coast of Brittany, Lorient is a lively port city with a strong maritime heritage and a distinctly Breton character. Discover the waterfront at Lorient La Base, where historic submarine bunkers reflect the city’s naval past, or enjoy the harbour views and coastal scenery that make this corner of France a charming place to explore. Scenic Freechoice: Breton Culture in Brech: Discover medieval Auray, explore Breton heritage, and enjoy a traditional dance workshop and local tasting. Vannes & Saint Goustan: Explore historic Vannes, enjoy a traditional Breton crêpe lunch, and discover the picturesque medieval harbour of Saint-Goustan. UNESCO South Megalith: Visit Carnac and Erdeven’s ancient standing stones, uncovering Brittany’s prehistoric mysteries and UNESCO-listed heritage. Lorient & World War II: Uncover Lorient’s wartime history with a guided visit to the Keroman Submarine Base and the former German naval command residences at Kernevel Harbour.  Anchored: 10:00 – 20:00

Day 23: Dublin

Dublin is making a comeback. The decade-long “Celtic Tiger” boom era was quickly followed by the Great Recession, but The Recovery has finally taken a precarious hold. For visitors, this newer and wiser Dublin has become one of western Europe’s most popular and delightful urban destinations. Whether or not you’re out to enjoy the old or new Dublin, you’ll find it a colossally entertaining city, all the more astonishing considering its intimate size.It is ironic and telling that James Joyce chose Dublin as the setting for his famous Ulysses, Dubliners, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man because it was a “center of paralysis” where nothing much ever changed. Which only proves that even the greats get it wrong sometimes. Indeed, if Joyce were to return to his once-genteel hometown today—disappointed with the city’s provincial outlook, he left it in 1902 at the age of 20—and take a quasi-Homeric odyssey through the city (as he so famously does in Ulysses), would he even recognize Dublin as his “Dear Dirty Dumpling, foostherfather of fingalls and dotthergills”?For instance, what would he make of Temple Bar—the city’s erstwhile down-at-the-heels neighborhood, now crammed with cafés and trendy hotels and suffused with a nonstop, international-party atmosphere? Or the simple sophistication of the open-air restaurants of the tiny Italian Quarter (named Quartier Bloom after his own creation), complete with sultry tango lessons? Or of the hot–cool Irishness, where every aspect of Celtic culture results in sold-out theaters, from Once, the cult indie movie and Broadway hit, to Riverdance, the old Irish mass-jig recast as a Las Vegas extravaganza? Plus, the resurrected Joyce might be stirred by the songs of Hozier, fired up by the sultry acting of Michael Fassbender, and moved by the award-winning novels of Colum McCann. As for Ireland’s capital, it’s packed with elegant shops and hotels, theaters, galleries, coffeehouses, and a stunning variety of new, creative little restaurants can be found on almost every street in Dublin, transforming the provincial city that suffocated Joyce into a place almost as cosmopolitan as the Paris to which he fled. And the locals are a hell of a lot more fun! Now that the economy has finally turned a corner, Dublin citizens can cast a cool eye over the last 20 crazy years. Some argue that the boomtown transformation of their heretofore-tranquil city has permanently affected its spirit and character. These skeptics (skepticism long being a favorite pastime in the capital city) await the outcome of “Dublin: The Sequel,” and their greatest fear is the possibility that the tattered old lady on the Liffey has become a little less unique, a little more like everywhere else.Oh ye of little faith: the rare ole gem that is Dublin is far from buried. The fundamentals—the Georgian elegance of Merrion Square, the Norman drama of Christ Church Cathedral, the foamy pint at an atmospheric pub—are still on hand to gratify. Most of all, there are the locals themselves: the nod and grin when you catch their eye on the street, the eagerness to hear half your life story before they tell you all of theirs, and their paradoxically dark but warm sense of humor. It’s expected that 2016 will be an extra-special year in the capital, as centenary celebrations of the fateful 1916 Easter Rising will dominate much of the cultural calendar.

Day programme:

Medical Facilities

For your peace of mind, Scenic Eclipse is equipped with a medical centre offering primary care, staffed at all times by an on call doctor. You must advise us prior to finalising your booking of any pre-existing medical conditions that might increase your risk of requiring medical attention, affecting the normal conduct of the cruise and / or the enjoyment of other cruise guests.

It is important to note, however, that there are no hospitals or doctors available in polar and remote regions, and emergency evacuation is extremely difficult and expensive.

Cruising conditions can be unpredictable and rough waters may be encountered anytime. If you suffer from seasickness, please consult your Medical Practitioner before your cruise and always carry the recommended preventative medications. Our resident medical team can assist you with additional medication and services if required, with any relevant payments charged to your on board account.

Am I allowed to take prescription medication?

Yes, you are allowed to carry whatever prescription medication you require, and we’d recommend packing an ample supply that covers the duration of your cruise or tour. Due to strict drug laws in certain countries, make sure medication is carried in its original packaging with the prescription label clearly marked. When travelling through airports or border crossings, we’d recommend that you keep medication in your hand luggage ready for inspection.

If your question has not been fully answered, please get in touch via our Contact Us page.

Can Scenic arrange my passport and visas?

Scenic cannot arrange a passport or visas on your behalf, but our experienced Reservations Team may be able to advise you on the type of visas and documentation you need when visiting certain countries.

Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the conclusion of your trip. Please check your passport before departure and give yourself time to apply for a new one if this is required. Also, if the nationality on your passport differs from the country in which you currently reside, contact your local consulate to ensure you have the right documents for travel. Your holiday may be disrupted if you cannot provide valid documents at airports and border crossings.

Can Scenic organise my travel insurance?

No, Scenic is unable to provide travel insurance. We’d recommend that you arrange insurance cover that best suits you and covers you in the event of unforeseen circumstances. It’s also a good idea to take any documents relating to your insurance with you when you travel.

What fitness levels do cruises/tours require?

Due to the amount of excursions available during a Scenic cruise or tour, a reasonable level of fitness is required to take full advantage of each itinerary. You must be physically able and self-sufficient to undertake the cruise or tour you have booked, and/or travel with a companion who is able to provide any assistance you may require during your holiday. Some of the all-inclusive excursions offered require a reasonable level of fitness to complete, and you may be required to climb ramps and/or stairs.

Please also note that not all Scenic ships have a lift. Here is a list of the ships which have an elevator and their restrictions:

– Scenic Space-Ships in Europe have a lift which services the Diamond Deck and Sapphire Deck.

– Scenic Spirit has a lift which services all decks between the Diamond Deck and Gem Deck.

I’m pregnant – can I still travel on a river cruise, ocean voyage or land journey?

The majority of cruise operators recommend that pregnant women should not travel after the 28-week period. If you do decide to travel, you may be asked to provide a doctor’s certificate clarifying you’re fit to travel.

Do the ships provide mobility-wheelchair access?

We welcome passengers with medical conditions or disabilities and can provide mobility provisions when notified in writing of a person’s needs before boarding. However, please be aware that there may be limitations on board and during excursions. Some of our ships do not have elevators, and where there is an elevator on board it may not access all decks. While collapsible wheelchairs are permitted on board under appropriate circumstances, you must be able to climb up and down stairs on coaches, and some excursions may require you to negotiate cobblestones or climb steps.

In addition, standard suites and bathrooms have significant thresholds and cabin doors which limit access, meaning they may not be wide enough to allow access to many wheelchairs. Please speak to a member of our team about your requirements prior to booking so that we can offer information on mobility and access.
